I've recently unearthed a box of books from my dads garage. In it was Battlefields Beyond Tomorrow. A collection of short stories from the greats. Asimov, Heinlein, Herbert, Clarke, and Drake. Plus many others. I really enjoyed the one by Drake and was thinking of picking up some of the slammers novels. I was wondering if there were certain books I should grab and others to avoid or should I go and get the three volume collection for about $50. USD Is there a chronological way to read the books or are they fairly stand alones within the same universe? Any other opinions offered would be helpful.

I enjoyed them in the pure order of publication.

I bought the three compilations which had everything published and some new stuff. They were great bargains from Amazon! I really didn't care about chronological order since none of them seemed directly related to others much.

Nazrat's pretty close on the mark. I have a bunch of
Slammer's books, some stories repeated, some stand alone
but all of 'em good.

I'm not sure there is a 'begin' to the Slammers' tale,
but there is a sort of end, where Hammer becomes
President of Friesland, which is where the Slammers got
their start.

Sorry, I forget the name of that one. It may be
_Paying the Piper_.

I think the compilation would be the way to go, you don't really need to read them in any order. I don't have them because I have everything through second-hand purchasing except for the stuff written for the compilations. But I'll probably give in someday just to get the new stuff.

I've seen all three of the Slammers compilations at half price books, you might try there.
