Undoubtedly turpentine. Pretty common in old cough and cold remedies.

I found an empty bottle of this once while clearing out an old granary. I'd seen it in a history book when I was younger, and it was one of those surreal moments when you realize that yes, people really did use this stuff, including my great-grandfather. Not surprising really; he also used to mix his own pesticides (or poisons) and taste test them.
