Long-time TMPer Allen Elmer Curtis, aka AE Curtis passed away on September 16.

Allen served in the US Army and was very active in the southern California gaming scene. He wrote "Hannibal and the Punic Wars" for Warhammer Ancient Battles and was a strong supporter of the rule system.

A little over five years ago, my beloved sister-in-law passed away after a six-year battle with breast cancer. I'm naturally a private person and didn't really want to "open up" to anyone here or anywhere else about it as I felt like that was no one's business to begin with (unless I invite them) and also the fact that the post would be online forever and be a painful reminder of what was.

About a day or two after her passing, I did mention something indirectly about it. Three TMPers responded privately; one of them, to my surprise, was Mr. Allen E. Curtis.

I will always credit him especially and the other two TMPers, too, for helping me prepare for the funeral later that week. I only knew Allen through The Miniatures Page, and even though he had that "grumpy old bastard" exterior he showed incredible and tough compassion to a fellow TMPer in his moment of weakness. I, for one, never had an issue with him, and I was very sorry to see him leave our unique online community. I will ALWAYS be grateful to him for what he did for me and cherish the memory of his time here.

Godspeed, Allen, and thank you VERY much for your online comradery and for your service to our country. I salute you, sir.

I, too, was sad to see him leave TMP. RIP, Allen!

Bleeped text. Ahem, sorry, but the best word I could come up with. Allen and I have only corresponded sporadically of late, but he became a real friend over the years, and will be sorely missed. All the best old chap – rest in peace, and give my regards to Nancy.

Unfortunately I never met Allen in person. We corresponded thru TMP and email over the years. He was always a perfect gentleman. I was very unhappy when he left TMP, but stayed in touch in other ways. He was always willing to help out anyone who requested it. Our world is a smaller place without him. I will miss him terribly. Rest easy, old Soldier.

I too regretted his departure from TMP, and regretted not knowing him better. I've rarely encountered someone with such boundless curiosity, and I take solace in the thought that he at last has all the answers.

DJCoaltrain21 Sep 2014 6:41 p.m. PST

Such mournful news. I only knew him from TMP, but enjoyed his posts. I disliked his departure from TMP, and thought TMP less illuminating. Now the hobby is lesser for his departure from our world.

Attended college and ROTC with Allen. Nice guy, high energy, go-getter.

Sorry to hear this news, but a number of my contemporaries have passed on over the past few years, so this is how one realizes that time is passing them by.

God's speed, Allen.

As others have stated TMP was poorer when he left the forum. Allen was a font of knowledge. May you be in a better place sir.

Very shocked this morning to read this. Heard about it on the TooFatLardies list and immediately checked here. Allen was an enthusiastic supporter of mine when I owned True North Productions and we spent a lot of time conversing (email etc) about possibilities, production ranges etc.

Even tho I had never met him I did consider him a friend. Very sad. And yes, it is indicative of time passing too quickly.

Silurian22 Sep 2014 7:20 a.m. PST

I'm really sad to hear this news. I always enjoyed his posts.

I'll never forget one in particular.
His was the first comment made on my first ever sculpted miniature. Amongst other things he questioned whether the sculptor had ever laid eyes on another human being!
Needless to say, he wasn't my favourite person at that moment, but after shattering my fragile ego he ultimately made me go back and seriously re-evaluate what I was doing. I'm very grateful for that.

R.I.P. Allen.

altfritz22 Sep 2014 9:14 a.m. PST

Sad news. I always valued his input here and on other forums, especially with regards to ancient history and military matters. RIP.

Great War Ace22 Sep 2014 9:48 a.m. PST

At about the time aecurtis went away I considered his departure and others clear evidence of the hemorrhage of the old TMP into the anemic version it has been ever since. Newbies won't know the difference, and a new TMP is as viable as the old TMP, but I miss that old TMP, especially when I am reminded at times like this….

That is very sad news. I did not know him beyond this site but he was always an intelligent and well-informed poster. I was sad to see him go from TMP, yet alone from this world.

RIP sir.

I only knew Mr. Curtis through the keyhole of TMP. He was a wealth of knowledge and a generous sharer of wisdom. I will miss his wit, his no-nonsense frankness and most of all his encyclopedic knowledge of wargaming and History. The world seems diminished by his passing but heaven will be all the richer. God's speed, A.E. Curtis.

Texas Grognard25 Sep 2014 2:45 p.m. PST

Darn! Allen was a big help to me when I got into Flames of War and WWII gaming in general. He also gave me a boatload of info on the disastrous Sgt York AA vehicle program. Rest in Peace Allen and salut y'all!
