I'm learning a second language, a Native American. Any advice on memorizing? Other advice?

Thanks.

Start young!

On a more serious note, is the Native American language you chose from one of the tribes in the Spokane-CDA region?

Best of luck to you!

I'm trying my hand at Lakota -one word at the time…

All I can say is practice, practice, practice.

Make sure you get the sounds right, so use written texts only as a reminder after you learned the sounds properly.

Took a 'course' in Navajo as a night class while in high school. I remember a couple of words and how to pronounce them…

Total immersion is best, and if that is not possible, get as many hours in with native speakers as possible. Book / CD-based learning is important, but real progress comes from mixing with native speakers.
And confidence. Try your new language as often as possible. Do not be afraid of making mistakes.
As my Mandarin tutor says,' 做做做!不怕错!' Which basically means 'Do it, do it, do it! Don't fear mistakes!' it is catchier in Mandarin because 做 and 错 rhyme.
