Yea, cause a female superhero with breasts as big as her head is going to attract female readers. Strange I always thought it was well written stories that brought readers… regardless of their sex. |

Well Thor maybe a cross dresser? Mike Adams P.S. If Archie is gay or dead why not a cross dresser for Thor? |

Female comic readership is at its all time highest. Not sure why Marvel decided to do this and reveal it on the TV show "The View". Thor is riding high with Chris Hemsworth in the movie role and the Avengers 2 coming out in a year. They have positioned this as a bonus for female readers, but we all know he will return to male form at some point. What does this say to the female readers they are pandering to? What do you tell your son who wants to read the Thor comic after he watches one of the Thor movies or the Avengers only to find out the hero he thought was male is now female? I guess you can buy him older comics. The biggest question is why is Marvel doing this? Gaining new readership for the Thor comic shouldn't be an issue right now. |

They're just getting on the "let's confuse the genders" bandwagon. I, for one, welcome our confusing new overlords. |

To be fair, Loki was the Trickster god, so you'd expect him to pull a gender bender routine. I always get a kick out of the fact that these sort of stunts are always played up as being brave and bold but if we took an iconic female and turned her male, people would lose their . This is about money. The funny thing is that they already have so many strong female characters who are part of Norse mythology to choose from. I actually like the Marvel premise that the power of Thor resides in the hammer, which opens up possibilities that anyone worthy can pick up the hammer and 'be' Thor. (As a student of Viking mythology, this and the fact that Loki is Thor's brother in the comics drive me nuts- but as a comic, I'm fine with that notion). However, if the hammer is the power, then it somewhat makes the person who wields it less relevant since they are now reduced to the role of a cypher. Now let's see the comic where Wonder Woman's powers are transferred to a man. That would make folks crazy. |

Alternate Universe? – let's face it, Marvel have plenty to choose from. |

To be fair, Loki was the Trickster god, so you'd expect him to pull a gender bender routine. In the "real" mythology of the sagas, Odin states that Loki spent eight years as a woman on Earth and gave birth to children during that time (which is repeatedly described as perverse). He also gave birth to Odin's famous steed after being impregnated by a stallion while playing at being a mare, so there's some fine Allfather hypocrisy going on there. :) |

What would Marvel know about Thor anyways. |

To me it just seemed perverse since the Thor / Avengers movies are making a small fortune – correction, a large fortune. There must be some overspill to additional comic sales so why choose Thor? Make Daredevil a woman, make Elektra a man, who'd care? |

And then there was Tiresias in Greek "mythology". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiresias Note that he was CURSED by Hera when transformed into a woman. A real one too, since "he" gave birth. Then, he got his masculinity back. So, the gods, being the s that they were, asked him which had better pleasure in sex, the man or the woman. Giving the wrong answer, he was cursed again. Ya know… There is plenty of "real" story behind god superheroes. Why make it up? Even the real Thor (Donner…) has a fascinating back story. Why make things up? |

- "X dies !" - "X is gay/lesbian/TG !" - "X is the first non-male/caucausian/Christian version of Y" - "X and Y are having a gay marriage." We get these headlines with increasing regularity and they always sound like the most mindblowing event in human history; alongside the discovery of fire, the moon landings and keeping up with the Kardassians … And 99.99% of the time it's been done before, sometimes decades earlier with little or none of the self-congratulatory fanfare they are trying to hype and usually done a lot better/honestly than the new "designed to OMG the great unwashed" version. |

Ya know… There is plenty of "real" story behind god superheroes. Why make it up? Even the real Thor (Donner…) has a fascinating back story. Why make things up? For the same reason some people think adding zombies, vampires, werewolfs, or Hitler's-head-in-a-jar in a suit of power armor dual wielding tesla cannons makes WWII more interesting? Damon, not that I agree with that… |

These changes ask so many questions. Is Captain America the suit or the man wearing the suit? If you put the Superman suit on Bruce Wayne is he then Superman or a guy wearing a Superman suit? Is Iron Man the suit or the man wearing the suit? As to Thor, is this a power or is it Thor in a female body? If you can change things so easily, how can you truly care about a character since it doesn't matter who the person is. I'm not anti-minority version, just don't like the lack of caring about the characters that have been so established. Just throw anyone into the suit , they are easily replaceable. This is like the 1975 Corvette. It had a body of a Corvette, but it only had 165 HP engine, so is it truly a corvette? It's so confusing! |
DonaldCox | 17 Jul 2014 2:30 p.m. PST |
Now if they had a 1975 Corvette become Thor, it would at least be an original idea. |

If it makes nerds angry, I am in favour of it :) Now, maybe one day, we can have a video game hero that is not a grizzled, short brown haired white space marine who talks like he's been eating kitty litter. |
