I'm thinking about heading up to Ontario next month to see a few historical sites and the ROM; just wondering if anyone has been to the fort and what you thought of it.

Stop by Niagara on the Lake if you head that way. Ft George had done stuff on the war of 1812 since They were occupied for 6 months starting in 1813

Well worth a visit – if you go by Ft Erie /Buffalo crossing you can easily visit Ft Erie and Ft George at Naiagar4a on the Lake as well as the Chippewa and Lundy's Lanr Battlefields

Ft York is currently building a new visitor centre to be opened sometime in the Fall of this year but even without it is a good visit – This Sunday (April 27th is a special day celebrating the 201st Anniversary of the Battle of York Ft York usually has a good selection of books and 1812 souvenirs

I have mixed feelings on the ROM it underwent a massive rebuild and the building is superb but to an oldtimer like me it seems that a lot of history particularly Native American and European Armor disappeared If you like dinosaurs, fancy geology-and biology you will love it It has a good Asian section and there is a special exhibit on now on artifacts from the Forbidden City

I went to fort back in 2002. It was well worth the walk to it and visiting in March meant it was quiet. The staff were very helpful and provided lots of insight and knowledge. Even the Mrs (who's not a history buff) found it enjoyable and interesting.

One of the reasons I'm thinking about making the trip is because of the Forbidden City Exhibit.

Fort Erie might be a possible side trip once I am in Toronto. I won't be driving by as I'll be coming from SW Ohio, up to Detroit and through Windsor (there are a couple if sites in Amherst I'd like to see as well).

Thanks to all.

I suggest you do the circle route using the 401 to get to Toronto from Detroit/Windsor then return by using the QEW to Buffalo ,stopping over at Niagara, then going home via the south shore of Lake Erie.

I saw the Forbidden City exhibit and it was very good There was a lot of good things on display and the written descriptions and explanations are excellent I really enjoyed the technique where animation was used to bring scroll pictures to life. There is a lot of high quality yet reasonably priced merchandise and books on sale spread between the special exhibit store and the regular museum shop.

While there make sure you save time for the Museum's Asian galleries which are rated as amongst the best in the world.

The only bad point is the combined $40 USD cost per person to enter the museum and see the special exhibit yet still worth it
