Some pitcher I never heard of before just signed for $210 USD million, and said he was "humbled" by it.

I hate it when some Alpha type claims to be "humbled" by praise, and/or acknowledgement of their greatness.

Listen, Pal. Humility is not what got you there. It is KNOWING you can throw a 110 mph fastball or a forward pass 70 yards that got you there. If you suddenly turn humble on us, you will not be the guy that just got that fancy contract.

It's like politicians being "humbled by the trust The People™ put in me with their votes." Again, if you had a single sliver of humility in your body, you would not be a politician.
Or a surgeon.
Or an astronaut or fighter pilot.

Glad I got that off my chest. grin

I think of someone being humbled when they have been bludgeoned to the ground.

Or after a tremendous amount of success, they had a huge failure at what they do. Said pitcher should fell humbled if he goes into a 20 game slump.

Well, we're going a long way without knowing the personality in question. They may, just possibly, be humble. There are a few people around with humility and talent. Not very many, certainly.

But that said, yeah, when I hear "humbled" in this type of situation it sounds like trying to clear a vague sense of guilt for getting handed a sum larger than the GDP of the poorest 9 nations, or about equal to the poorest five combined, for playing a game. That's the income for 4,200 American families.

How he spends it, of course, will be the true test.

I think its a way of saying

" I really don't deserve it."

Irritation is its own reward.

"Humbled" is when something happens that you *don't* expect. It's only happened a few times in sports, but this is what it looks and sounds like: YouTube link

Moves me to tears everytime.
