This post by Jared Shurin appeared several months ago on the Tor Books blog: So You Want to Be a Book Collector
I have found myself going back to it more than once. It's simply an overview of the art of collecting books, but it makes me think about why I do it; I hope that it will make me a true collector, and not just a hoarder of books. I think that my fellow TMPers might enjoy reading it (and its principles are applicable to many kinds of collections), so I pass it along to you all. Happy reading! Ron |

If it works for books, could it work for lead? |

I would like all Ace Doubles – not bothered by condition, and I've often dreamt of a full set of Gollancz Yellow Backs – but there are a lot of them
a lot. |

While we have a dozen shelves of books and our theme is "stuff that appeals to my wife and I", we are not collectors. I do, however, have a fetish (i.e., no real, practical reason) to get a hardbound copy of the OED

I would also like a full set of the Ballentine Adult Fantasy Series. It's not porn, by the way. Things like Dunsany, James Branch Campbell, Evangaline Walton. Fantasy. But for adults. And not porn. |

Looks like I'm about half way there
it'll be the Tolkien and the Lovecraft that'll be the (expensive) problem. Love the cover for "The man who was Thursday". The Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series was the best thing Lin Carter ever did – I have many of his books, but in reality he was a better fan than he was an author (IMHO). |

I collect books on a few subjects that interest me. I don't collect books just because they're classics or because they're valuable. |
