Not a great surprise given his recent health and age but the great man has passed on. RIP

RIP – a loss to humanity

Despite the harm inflicted upon you by others, you chose the high road and went with forgiveness instead of revenge. The world should have more like you. Rest in peace sir.

Jakar Nilson05 Dec 2013 3:24 p.m. PST

RIP.

And given how he's been used like a yo-yo in recent years by everyone, like the non-stop media coverage, he definitely deserves the peace.

bong6705 Dec 2013 4:01 p.m. PST

RIP
We may never see his like again. A truly great man who lived by his principles and showed the true power and glory in forgiveness and turning the other cheek.

ming3105 Dec 2013 4:29 p.m. PST

he lived for peace may he always have it

Lee Brilleaux Fezian05 Dec 2013 4:45 p.m. PST

I heard speak him when he first came out of Robben Island. I can't think of anyone I admire more.

NoLongerAMember205 Dec 2013 5:09 p.m. PST

The world is a better place due to his life and works. May he rest in peace.

galvinm05 Dec 2013 7:32 p.m. PST

Rest easy, for you have indeed earned it.

Another great man gone.

Thank you Mr.Mandela, for teaching us to love instead of hate.

Interesting thoughts. I would have thought there might be a more mixed reaction to the news, even though he was a peaceful person later in life .

John the OFM05 Dec 2013 9:12 p.m. PST

One of the most admirable politicians of our time. If anybody had a right for vengeance, it was he. And yet, he had the most Christ-like strength to guide his nation to a peaceful resolution.
The world could use many more like him.
His moral greatness is awe-inspiring.

An amazing man. 27 years in prison and he unifies a nation including the people who jailed him.

It is vanishingly rare for a politician to be a truly great person but he was.

jpattern205 Dec 2013 10:42 p.m. PST

One of the true greats of our time, or of any time.

RIP, sir.

Nelson Mandela, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mahatma Gandhi: the 20th Century titans of non-violent protest. We in the 21st Century should learn the example of their lives.

Godspeed, Mr. Mandela, and thank you VERY, very much.

It is surprising that so many people who like history are so unaware of his past; he was the opposite of a non-violent protest guy.

Yesthatphil06 Dec 2013 8:59 a.m. PST

Except that Mandela epitomises the transition from a violent liberation movement to democratic change. And the possibility of 'truth and reconciliation' as opposed to revenge and recrimination … and that is the whole point.

Not something I am going to debate on this day.

His country lost a father, we lost a giant of our times.

Rest in peace Madiba, and thank you.

Indeed.

Patrick R06 Dec 2013 5:00 p.m. PST

Mandela had a mixed record and made mistakes, but he understood the need for dialogue and was ready to change course when needed, unlike political leaders who believe they have access to the ultimate truth and will not be swayed by reality or actual needs.

A very pragmatic man, a little flawed, but without him South Africa might look very different today and not for the better.

RIP

I only wish that many more countries would have learned from his wisdom. South Africa was saved from what would have been a bloody and costly civil war. As a result, South Africa is stronger than ever. Rest In Peace, Madiba.

Tom Bryant08 Dec 2013 12:05 a.m. PST

Post Apartheid South Africa owes a great deal to the intellectual and spiritual transformation of Nelson Mandela. Was he a violent zealot as a younger man? Most certainly. Did he learn from the experience? Most certainly and in that learning we too can gain learning and wisdom.

Godspeed and Fair Winds Brother Nelson. We have lost a great light in an ever darkening world. You helped teach us how to become that light and I pray we may be worthy.

The arc of the man's life was incredible. A sad day: RIP.
