Very late to the party. I didn't know it was based on the Cussler novel. I don't like Mathew Mconageah, and Penelope Cruz' fake, over the top accent is sickening.

But, I started it, and can say they did a great job keeping it Cussleresque. Penelope was homely and annoying as ever, but playing an annoying, homely, W.H.O. busy body, she was actually cast well.

Dirk Pitt was pretty darned accurate. Al Giordino? No, they made him into a bumbling sidekick, but I thought Macy did a good job as Sandecker. No St. Julian Perlmutter though. :(

All in all, much better than expected.

Hope they make more Cussler films!

It was a fun DVD rental. Not having read the book, I was not bound to expectations. No doubt making it more enjoyable than you found it.

Here you go, Smokey:

For me, this is the movie I think of as 'Sahara':

Bogart's Sahara is much better.

"Looks like we need to pull a Panama"

Always heard Raise the Titanic was a stinker (Clive even said so).

But it's got Anne Archer, and she is smokin' hot!

Woncder why no one does more Cussler movies?

Rrobbyrobot29 Jul 2013 4:25 p.m. PST

The 'original' movie was the best. It had a great cast. Especially the M3 Lee.

Woncder why no one does more Cussler movies?

Two hugely expensive box office bombs which were both repudiated by Cussler. He hated the first one so much he didn't allow another film adaptation for another 25 years, and then he sued the producers of the new film.

No, I don't wonder why Cussler movies aren't made.

Smokey Roan29 Jul 2013 4:33 p.m. PST

Oh, he didn't like Sahara? It was Cruz, and that poor Al Giordino casting, wasn't it?

Smokey Roan29 Jul 2013 4:34 p.m. PST

I would make Cyclops, and make it well. :)

altfritz29 Jul 2013 6:16 p.m. PST

I quite liked Sahara. Cussler's novel's must be trash (based upon the plot of the movie) but it was an entertaining movie. So good lines, some funny bits and good action, and – to top it off – it wasn't 3D!

Smokey Roan29 Jul 2013 6:20 p.m. PST

Cussler's novel was NOT trash. ;)

I'd pay to see "Vixen 03".

That movie is not "Sahara." Oh yeah, it calls itself "Sahara," but it's not the real "Sahahra."

The real "Sahara" stars Humphrey Bogart and an M-3 Grant tank named Lulu Belle.

Indeed. However the fake "Sahara" had some nice ironclad scenes in the first 10 minutes.

I get really thirsty whenever I watch Sahara or Flight of the Phoenix.

"Bogart's Sahara is much better."

many dittos!

Sahara has Humphrey Bogart ….the other was trying to cash in on the name

haywire30 Jul 2013 7:20 a.m. PST

I heard the James Belushi version of "Sahara" is pretty good as well.

I like all of the Cussler novels but I am really digging the Oregan files series and the Issac bell stuff.

Real reason if I recall is that the studio finally figured out that someone had 'inflated' Clive's sold numbers (of books) nation and world wide and that the audience was a lot smaller than promised. A lawsuit made Clive cough up big cash to settle it.

Personally I liked the movie, warts and all. "Looks like we need to pull a Panama", makes me smile everytime. Would like to have seen "Raise The Titanic" with the same sense of humor in it.

It was not the book, but still fun to watch.

Taken from one of many stories out there on this disaster (sad):

"The "Sahara" lawsuit began in 2004 when Cussler filed a S$140-million-dollar complaint against Bristol Bay, alleging the production company was not honoring his creative rights under the film adaptation agreement for his series of books based on the adventure character Dirk Pitt. The film, which starred Matthew McConaughey, Penelope Cruz, and Steve Zahn—and was directed by Breck Eisner—opened in April 2005 to positive reviews. Bristol Bay countersued Cussler for his bad acts during production and his concerted attempts to thwart the film's success. Then, on the eve of trial, when it was discovered that Cussler and his publishing agent Peter Lampack had grossly inflated Cussler's sales figures, Bristol Bay additionally brought a fraud claim against Cussler.

The resulting trial lasted 14 weeks and received international press attention. The jury found against Cussler on all counts. Nonetheless, Cussler and his trial counsel Bert Fields repeatedly claimed post-trial that Cussler was the "clear winner" because the jury's findings somehow entitled him to US$8.5 million dollars for the adaptation rights to a second novel. After the trial court rejected this claim, Cussler appealed on the same grounds, and the Court of Appeal again rejected this claim, finding Cussler is not entitled to US$8.5 million and thus has no net gain"

Pretty sad, all the way around.

"Raise The Titanic" was a turkey. The film only grossed about $13.8 USD million against an estimated $40 USD million budget. Lew Grade whose company produced the film famously remarked "it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic".

As the Sarah; the opening sequence with the Confederate were really cool.
