I had a fine time over the weekend at Sharon Woods Heritage Village in Sharonville,OH this past Saturday with my pards of the 9th Kentucky,1st Tenn.,a Virginia unit and CS Marines and I took a hit during the Saturday battle like a champ. Dented my tin cup and lost a screw to my bayonet locking ring, but otherwise a fair day in spite of a threat of storms which passed to the east of the park.

Old Slow Trot23 May 2013 6:37 a.m. PST

Found a replacement screw(known as a Philister Screw)the other day. Fits OK,and hopefully should hold.

This weekend, there's a living history event at the James A. Ramage Museum in Ft. Wright,KY -"Battery Hooper Days",one of the last surviving earthwork artillery emplacements from the 1862 "Siege of Cincinnati".

shooting at Yankees that won't take hits

I remember being on a 12pdr at Franklin TN a few years back, we fired at the Rebs per the script at 25 years (what would have been double canister.) Not one too a hit. ;-)

Old Slow Trot16 Aug 2013 6:37 a.m. PST

The hit I took at the Sharon Woods event last May,was about 15 minutes into the scenario, and our unit's second Sarge suggested it,to clear a firing path for some rear rankers(I was in the front rank). But I still had enough breath in me to shout some encouragement to my pards.

And coming up the last weekend of September, there's Caesar's Creek State Park Pioneer Village in Waynesville,OH. Sunday's activities will include a memorial service for a recently passed-on comrade in the reenacting hobby.

Old Slow Trot26 Sep 2013 6:52 a.m. PST

Am planning on being there at the above. Weather should cooperate, for the most part(possible rain Sunday afternoon). Anyone coming should be aware also of the Ohio Valley RenFest going on also in the area around Waynesville,OH,as there may be traffic slowdowns en route to either event.

Old Slow Trot01 Oct 2013 7:24 a.m. PST

Caesar's Creek Pioneer Village ACW event went rather well, with a few hiccups. My tent held up well(had to use a pair of small logs to boost the uprights as they were a bit shorter than I needed. )Battle scenarios were more or less generic. My unit took a Yankee battery from behind. The officer in command of the captured gun, after taking a hit, made a certain hand gesture as he lay there. The rain(rather light)did appear in the early afternoon, during the memorial service for one of our own, then let up for a few hours for the Sunday battle, then as I was packing up to go home,it started again, and got home safely. Managed to keep hydrated, and it was helpful to me in being able to keep up with the rest of my pards.

Old Slow Trot09 Oct 2013 6:36 a.m. PST

This weekend has an ACW event at Hartford City,IN,and the weekend before Halloween, another in Monroe,OH.

Old Slow Trot23 Oct 2013 6:41 a.m. PST

Monroe,OH Civil War Days this weekend. Weather is cloudy and cold, but no rain expected for Saturday or Sunday. It's at the Monroe Community Park.

Old Slow Trot28 Oct 2013 7:14 a.m. PST

Cold and windy Saturday, not as many uniforms(estimate around 50 to 60 overall),but a pretty good time in any case. Just went on Saturday, myself. Took on some Kansas "Redlegs" who were hidden in some woods, one fellow portraying Jefferson Davis dropping by, and one of our crew asking him when was payday. Took a hit myself during the main Saturday battle.

Old Slow Trot01 Nov 2013 6:56 a.m. PST

And thus ends another season for my unit, other than winter meeings and drills until spring.

Old Slow Trot12 Feb 2014 8:09 a.m. PST

Drill coming next weekend.

Old Slow Trot24 Apr 2014 6:44 a.m. PST

And,third weekend of May,a fair-sized battle reenactment in Resaca,Georgia on part of the actual battlefield.

Next weekend (May 2-4) will be the 150th Wilderness reenactment. The site is within a stone's throw of where they hold Historicon!

June 21/22,Columbus ,Ohio. Ohio History Museum's "Ohio Village" will be hosting an ACW reenactment event. Battles each day, along with drill demonstrations, camp life, even a group of British Royal Engineers as observers. Site situated near the State Fairgrounds and Crew Stadium(Home of MLS's Columbus Crew.)

tigrifsgt03 Jun 2014 12:01 p.m. PST

Old Slow Trot: Can you tell me who is the hosting unit for this event? I may be able to make it Sunday only. Since I will probably be alone, any issues with "independent"? After 30 years and making it to 1st Sgt., I ran into a couple of issues last year.

Old Slow Trot05 Jun 2014 6:57 a.m. PST

Possibly the 5th Kentucky,Co. B. Walk-ons,are OK,so I read. Not sure what other specific units are going to be there. May try for Saturday, myself. Good luck.

Old Slow Trot24 Jun 2014 6:41 a.m. PST

Sharon Woods Heritage Village reenactment coming up next-July 12-13.

tigrifsgt04 Jul 2014 12:48 p.m. PST

Old Slow Trot, what's your unit? This is just in case we may happen to cross paths at Heritage Village? I'm usually not hard to miss. Tiger uniform, 1st Sgt. stripes on the cuff, Walker Colt in holster, big bowie knife on the back of my belt.

Old Slow Trot07 Jul 2014 7:16 a.m. PST

D Co./9th Kentucky Inf.,I'll likely be in a black slouch hat/blue wool cord around it, with light gray jeancloth trousers, either a dark Richmond gray vest or gray jeancloth frock coat w/ blue cuffs &collar, buck private. Probably will be there Saturday at least. Weather may be a bit warm and muggy ,but rain is more likely earlier this week.

Old Slow Trot10 Jul 2014 6:37 a.m. PST

And a fairly even chance of it on Sunday.

Old Slow Trot14 Jul 2014 7:20 a.m. PST

Was there Saturday, thought I may have seen you, tigrifsgt, but not sure. 9th KY was designated 1st Company for the battallion. Were you wearing a straw top hat? Took a hit near the village flagpole on Saturday as we fell back through town and into the main field. . Stormed real good Sunday afternoon, and quite humid on both days.

tigrifsgt15 Jul 2014 7:10 p.m. PST

Had to work overnight on fri., didn't wake up in time to make it. Sunday was a cookout at my sons house. It's hard to pass up ribs, chicken and burgers. We may still cross paths before the season is over, maybe Ceasars Creek. TIG

Old Slow Trot16 Jul 2014 6:49 a.m. PST

Meanwhile,I found some interesting pics of this year's event on Sharon Woods Heritage Village's website,on a Facebook link to photos,as well as pics from earlier reenactments there. I'm in a few of them from the 2012 event.

Old Slow Trot11 Aug 2014 6:50 a.m. PST

This weekend, the James A. Ramage Museum is hosting Battery Hooper Days in Ft. Wright,KY once again.

Old Slow Trot15 Aug 2014 6:53 a.m. PST

Incidentally,TIG;Caesar's Creek is off the schedule this year. They decided to only allow bluecoats and civilians this time, for whatever reason. Just found out this morning from my unit's First Sarge. However, there's a few events in October, one being in Indiana.

tigrifsgt15 Aug 2014 12:20 p.m. PST

Thanks for the news. I figured it was close and was going to try to go for one day. October events are sometimes tough for me, I don't have any cold weather gear.

Old Slow Trot29 Aug 2014 6:43 a.m. PST

Porbably going to hang it up early this season anyway, and start getting ready for next year.
