Folks, the missus wants a new camera. I've got an old Coolpix that's got good optical zoom and depth of field for taking pics of figures, and I think I'm allowed to keep that. But we have a three year old and another on the way and she wants a camera that takes the picture before the child has finished being cute and vanished into another room to break something. So I want something cheapish that doesn't spend 3 seconds focusing and taking the picture. Something that actually takes a picture when you press the button. Any thoughts?

Other than extreme macro, the 8MP camera in my phone does just fine.

I had pretty much thought the Smartphone explosion rendered the idea of a dedicated digital camera obsolete. Who knew?

Mrs Streetline doesn't have a smart phone, nor want one. She checks her email on a regular basis, every 2 months, and facebook at the same time. She doesn't like technology. I almost expect us to end up with one of those really old fashioned things that has an actual film etc.

Good luck with film cameras. I preferred to use 800 speed film, and I can no longer find it anywhere. Same for 400 speed film. Still have my 35mm SLR camera, but upgraded to a digital SLR because I could not find film anymore. Another casualty of the digital revolution is the passing of fast development of film…no more 24 hour turn around on developing any more.

"…and another on the way"

Only 1 piece of advice – label your images early – maybe with name tags. Mine are 20 and 26, and the I have no idea which picture is of which prior to age 1.

Cheers – I expect the one with the cuddly zebra in every picture to be the oldest, and the one with the black eye for trying to take the zebra to be the youngest… :-)
