Name any fantasy or "other" book you want. You always have crows or ravens going right for the eyeballs.

So, why is this? Are eyeballs tastier than the liver or the tongue?

Steve Johnson12 Oct 2012 5:27 p.m. PST

They're easier to get to?

Jay Arnold12 Oct 2012 5:28 p.m. PST

Soft. Easy to get at. Everything else takes a bit more effort.

Yeah, they are squishy and gooey. But are they tastier?

Streitax12 Oct 2012 5:32 p.m. PST

Your talking about things that eat meat that's rotted in the sun for days, how tasty do eyeballs have to be to be tastier than the rest?

I believe someone once graphically contemplated that same question, gentlemen, with an interesting and humorous outcome. grin

Maybe crows are thirsty?

More gruesome fou us to think about – the crows took his EYES, man! After that, who cares?

Also, yes, they are easier to get to than just about anything. The tongue may or may not be available from behind the teeth, but the eyes just have a little flap of skin between them and the RAVENING BEAKS!

Same reason all the cattle "mutilated by aliens" are chewed up around the muzzle, lips and rear end. Soft & easily accessible.

It's a piece of shorthand horror that sets the scene without having to say a word or put up a placard. So convenient everybody uses this. Should be perverted into a crow sitting on a gallows, suddenly snatched and eaten alive by a passing starving peasant.

Crows love humour ?

They are after the retina at the back of the eyes, which is fat rich – it contains long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid. These are just what a crow needs to pack the yolk of its eggs with, so that the embyro inside can build its own nervous system. Lack of these fatty acids in an egg means the chick won't live to hatch.

If they were stronger, the crows would be cracking open the skull to get at the brain, or spine to get at the spinal cord!

Info from: Fats of Life, p178-9, by Prof Caroline Pond. She also mentions that storks have the same eye-eating habit as crows and their relatives.

I read Crows as Cows,

I thought this was some new descovery that cows were really nasty creatures, that only predtend to be nice and eat grass.

I'd always thought it was 'cause eyes are shiny and crows like shiny things.

Cows are nasty. They're only adorable from a distance.

They've got to start somewhere.

Crows will eat things that would make a seagull sick… they'll then eat the seagull sick.
