With all the Dredd stuff popping up, I thought I might try to get into the 2000AD stuff. Since I am in the US, what is teh best way to get started? Are there Kindle downloads of of the 1st appearance and on storylines?

Where should I start?

IDW publishing in the US is going to do a new series as well as reprint past stories in trades: link

To start at the beginning in an inexpensive way, I would look at the collected case files.

Volume 1 includes all the early stories – link

Also, if you can get a copy of the Judge Dredd: The Restricted Files, Vol. 1- 2000 AD Annuals & Specials. This is a collection of one-off stories from the yearly 2000ad annual. You'll see quite rapidly how the look and feel of the character develops from the early days to the character most people recognise as Dredd.

As I recall it the big step from Important major character to cultural icon occured around the time of The Cursed Earth (jeez but that was exciting at the time). And the first appearance of Judge Death was another jaw dropping moment.

The Complete Case Files – Volume 2 contains the Cursed Earth saga.

I'd also recommend Volume 5 for Block Mania and the Apocalypse War.
