I tried using skype for the 1st time today & now am confused.

When I tried to use my cell phone to call a local number, I get a message saying all US calls will be routed through & charged to my phone's Verizon account. & there's also a statement on the dialing page says I have to subscribe to Skype if I need to make international calls.

So when is the problem just that I'm trying to use it from my phone? It seems like if I can't make calls using Skype to the US & have to pay for international calls, that Skype is kind of useless.

Skype is only free for calls from one skype user to the other, so if you set up an account and create a user name then you can make free calls to others on the skype network, but not free to those who you have to dial on phone number for.

Also if you are using Skype on your phone then you may be "burning" data plan unless you are on a wifi network

Thanks, that explains it.

Since you got your answer I hope you don't mind me making a somewhat related comment –

We found the quality of the Skype calls was superior to the landline quality when communicating with our team in India. Definitely worth using when going between Skype users and one is overseas.
