My daughter has recently seen an episode of the original Speed Racer cartoon at a friends house & wants to watch more. But I haven't seen them in over 30 years, so barely remember them.

How violent were the stories? What use of guns or fighting was there? Anything spooky or scary?

While my daughter is 8, she's still very young in her TV watching & scared by the littlest things (e.g. Even though she loves the Disney princess characters, she won't watch most of their original movies because the antognists are "too scary", like The Beast, Malificent, Jafar).

They have 52 episodes of the original series on Hulu, so you can check them out and decide for yourself.

When I was your daughter's age, I was a huge fan of 'Speed Racer' (along with my best friend at that time, Roger), and I still enjoy it every once in a while (but not as much as I do the music from the series, which I have!). There are scenes of car crashes (both accidental and intentionally caused) which shows the ensuing explosion and apparent death of the driver, the use of firearms (which sometimes, again, results in the apparent death of a character[s]), and physical combat between characters (e.g. in one instance, between Speed and Kim Jugger, who raced against him across the desert in the Black Tiger in the two-part episode 'The Desperate Desert Race'). When I saw these as a kid, I thought no more about them than I did playing "cowboys and Indians" or "cops and robbers".

When you mentioned Disney characters that your daughter felt were "too scary" to watch, one particular 'Speed Racer' episode immediately came to mind. It was a scene in Part 3 of 'The Most Dangerous Race' (the one with Snake Oiler and the Car Acrobatic Team), where Trixie dreams about finding Speed after he was assumed to have been lost, only to find the following:

From what I remember, that was pretty much the most "scariest" thing I saw on the series, but I don't recall having a problem handling that when I was her age. Still, it might be a good idea to watch the episodes with her, just in case. Parental guidance definitely goes a long way, IMHO. If your little one can handle these previous images, or that scene (when you two do watch it together), she should have no real problem handling the rest of the series.

Good luck, Black Cavalier! thumbs up

But you have Chim Chim in the trunk. The original trunk monkey!

Speed was the last last thing I watched till I headed out the door to walk the two blocks to school.

The most dangerous thing about the show is of your older brother convinces you to ride a tire down the driveway like Chim Chim.

Since your daughter doesn't have my brother, she should be ok…

I remember one episode when Trixie tells Speed that she is worried for him, because the race is very dangerous. He slaps her on the face because she has no faith in him!
By todays standards, it is very chauvinistic. I would check the episodes beforehand.

Beowolf, that episode was "The Great Pineapple Race".
My favorite one, BTW…

NOT the movie though …the movie was unwatchable …took me three tries on HBO ( as painting background) to get through it

BTW, Beowoulf…
He did not slap her. He stiff arms her out of the car because he did not want to endanger her in a grueling part of the race.

I never had an exposure to Speed Racer as a kid, but I loved the movie! "Go Speed Racer!" :-)
