What are your favorite skits or characters from Saturday Night Live? There are so many good ones, that I can't remember them all. Here are my top 10:

1. Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker (Chris Farley)
2. Bass-O-Matic commercial (John Akroyd/Lorraine Newman)
3. Samauri Delicatesen and series (John Belushi)
4. Wayne's World series (Meyers & Carvey)
5. Chippendales' Dancers (Chris Farley)
6. King Tut (Steve Martin)
7. Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood (Eddie Murphy)
8. Celebrity Jeopardy (Will Farrell & Darrel Hammonds)
9. Church Lady series (Dana Carvey)
10. Weekend Update Point-Counterpoint (Jane, you ignorant -- Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtin).

What are some of your favorites?

The Blues Brothers.

Larry the Lobster Telathon

Dennis Miller's Weekend Updates. They were all hilarious and smart.

The Presidential Debates, but especially:
John Lovitz as Dukakis, riding up and down on his podium elevator
Darrell Hammond as Bill Clinton and later Al Gore ("the lock box")

The sketch where Reagan is shown behind the scenes as a no-nonsense taskmaster driving every detail of policy, who hates having to be laconic and affable in public. Had the advantage of being funny and not really political.

The opening sketch where Hilary rants about how anybody can be a vice presidential candidate (except, by implication, her), while standing next to Tina Fey's Sarah Palin "I can see Russia from my house." (Her words, by the way, not ever Palin's.)

And the post-"Bailout" vote press conference where the foreclosees are, in order, two ne'er-do-wells junkies and a yuppie couple trying to flip multiple investment homes, and the live-in surrogate they hired so the wife wouldn't have to deal with morning sickness and pregnancy pounds. It was a hoot, and skewered just about everybody involved equally.

James Wood as Dracula, having to question every potential victim for risk of being an AIDS carrier. (Victoria Jackson's monogamous housewife appears perfect, until she admits to being married to a musician. Dracula (already backing away): "Oh? Who?" Victoria (clueless): "Keith Richards. Maybe you've heard of him?" laugh)

Al Franken is a Vandal youth, and Bill Murray and Jane Curtin are his parents. Franken lights a bag of dog poop and knock's on Roman Tribune Steve Martin's tent door(?)
The parents pelead for him, and all agree that "kids today" are not what they used to be.
The skit ends wth Steve Martin commanding "Centurion, have them all put to death." I saw this one in a bar after a rough night apprehending alleged shoplifters at K-Mart, so it holds a secial place in my heart.

King Tut. Of course. That was the best all around show also, since it had Randy Newman singing "Short People" backed up by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

The Festrunk Brothers, the Wild and Crazy Guys.

Bass-o-Matic, without question.

Right after 9/11, the show resumed after two weeks. Mayor Giuliani introduced the show, with somber reflection. Lorne Michaels came out and said that he was glad to bring comedy back. Giuliani deadpanned "Why start now?" Lame, but it meant that we could all go back to being smartasses again.

Speaking of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger did a very good imitation of him while a SNL cast member "did" Mick.

Christopher Walken. Doing anything. The Continental. Dancing!
He should co-host the show with Samuel L Jackson, and then the whole universe would implodde from coolness.

Celebrity Jeopardy. Definitely, with Sean Connery's reading of the category titles.

When DeNiro and Pecci came on the show while they were being impersonated by the Goat Boy guy and someone else.

Theodoric of York, Medieval Barber

SNL Samurai

Nick The Lounge Singer ("Star Wars! Nuthin' but…Star Wars!")

"I gotta fevah! And the only prescription…is more cowbell!"

I still get a chuckle from the Jimmy Carter campaign video they did…

And who can forget "Tennis Without Balls"?

Or "It's a floor wax!" "It's a desert topping!"

dmclellan18 Apr 2012 6:33 p.m. PST

Eddie Murphy as Little Richard Simmons

jpattern218 Apr 2012 6:41 p.m. PST

Lots of great suggestions so far.

One of my favorites never makes the list: the Purina Rat Chow commercial with Chevy as the Pied Piper, from the first season. It's nowhere to be found online, that I'm aware of. It was both funny and dark, like the best of the sketches.

And of course Belushi's "Don't Look Back In Anger" short film. Funny, and so poignant, in light of what was to come: link

The girls singing their love song to Chevy when he broke his leg.

The French Chef.

You've come up with a lot of other good ones!

How about Toonces the Driving Cat

Ross Perot trying to ditch Stocksdale by driving off

The Andy Samberg-Justin Timberlake digital shorts are classics too.

I would probably revise my list and include the James Woods/Dracula, Cowbell/Christopher Walken and Julia Child/Dan Akroyd skits.

Altius19 Apr 2012 7:59 a.m. PST

Jon Lovitz as Satan on the People's Court, suing for breach of contract.

"The Richmeister! Makin' Copies!" (Even though I'm not generally a Rob Schneider fan.)

Will Farrell and Cheri Oteri as cheerleaders, especially the one when Jim Carrey appeared as a German exchange student.

"I'm Gumby, dammit!"

Belushi doing Joe Cocker, including in the background when Joe Cocker was actually performing.

Inkpaduta19 Apr 2012 10:27 a.m. PST

Best one ever was William Shatner playing himself at a star treak convention and he goes off on al the nerds "It was just a show, get a life!" Then comes back and tells them it was the Evil Kirk from some episode. Excellent!

Cincinnatus19 Apr 2012 7:25 p.m. PST

Well I did think the Moody Blues skit was pretty good.

I also liked the one at the end of one of the seasons where they weren't sure the show would be renewed and the whole cast came out and sang Billy Joel's Goodnight Saigon as a sort of possible finale.

2bit elroy20 Apr 2012 5:10 a.m. PST

Everyone loves the classics obviously. DA was probably the best fake pitch man ever. There are a few recent ones that I couldn't stop laughing at:

Andy Samberg's Digital Short about the cocaine-using executive (musical);

Any Stefon (Bill Hader) appearance on Weekend update;

There's also a fake big jam concert promo ad from time to time (Bobby Moynihan and Nasim Pedrad) that just cracks me up.

Old Slow Trot23 Apr 2012 6:52 a.m. PST

Molly Shannon as Mary Katherine Gallagher; Will Ferrell & Cheri Oteri as the Spartan Cheerleaders(and Cheri by herself as Judge Judy),Kristen Wiig as Gilly,Gilda Radner in near everything,Mary Gross as Dr. Ruth, the Robert Smigel cartoons ,Rachel Dratch as the grown up member of a kids TV show,Maya Rudolph as Donatella Versace,Dana Carvey as James Stewart in 'the lost ending of "It's A Wonderful Life",and Jim Breuer as Joe Pesci when the real Joe Pesci and the real Robert DeNiro show up.

Cincinnatus24 Apr 2012 7:37 p.m. PST

Oh my God. Please do not mention "Gilly" in a thread about best SNL skits. That is one of the dumbest, same old tired, one trick pony skits of all time. I HATE it.

Old Slow Trot26 Apr 2012 6:36 a.m. PST

Sorry 'bout that. Hope the others I picked were OK. And here's a few more, the auditions for "Star Wars" and for "Pulp Fiction",Colin Quinn doing the news, the 3 Stooges(Tim Kazurinski as Moe,Gary Kroeger as Larry and Joe Piscopo as Curly)as self defense teachers.

John the OFM26 Apr 2012 7:02 a.m. PST

We have gone quit a few posts before anyone started others' choices, but I absolutely hated the Spartan cheerleaders. It may have been a "funny once" skit, but the repitition just grated.

ComradeCommissar26 Apr 2012 1:35 p.m. PST

A lot of good ones, I'll just add:

The Lady's Man sketches
Canteen Boy (Adam Sandler & Alec Baldwin)
"I'm on a Boat" Digital Short

charles popp26 Apr 2012 2:46 p.m. PST

All great ones but this one is the best in my humble opinion

Here's another, the "Aliens" parody with guest host Sigourney Weaver where they accidentally off "E.T.". And when Drew Barrymore became the youngest guest host in SNL history back in the early 1980's,

DaleWill Supporting Member of TMP29 Apr 2012 10:53 a.m. PST

Christopher Walken as Brian on "Stalker Talk".

Host: Okay. Now, uh.. Brian. Uh.. how did your relationship end?

Brian: With "Bitch"?

Host: Uh.. yeah..

Brian: Say it!

Host: Uh.. okay.. How did your relationship end with "Bitch"?

Old Slow Trot30 Apr 2012 6:34 a.m. PST

Walken in the "I need more cowbell" bit,was fun.

Altius01 May 2012 7:53 a.m. PST

What if Superman was a Nazi?

cavcrazy02 May 2012 6:11 a.m. PST

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Alex Baldwin and his "Schweddy balls", that was classic.
Dan Akroyd as the who had a broken glass factory, Or how about Eddie Murphy doing Buckwheat sings……..all great skits

Old Slow Trot03 May 2012 6:33 a.m. PST

What if Spartacus had a Piper Cub,is another one(Kirk Douglas guested on that episode.)Or the cold opening with Charlton Heston falling asleep and waking up to find Studio 8H taken over by apes. And William Shatner with the starship Enterprise being turned into a space restaurant,Dana Carvey as Khan the health inspector.

Phil DAmato25 May 2012 9:27 a.m. PST

Andy Kaufman. Any episode with him cracked me up.
