Back at the beginning of June, my brother called me on the phone and said he has a really cool thing he wants to do as my birthday present, IF I can come to Houston. He wouldn't elaborate, he just wanted to know if I'd be able to come. Of course, I said.

Reflecting on this, I was struck by several thoughts. First, I've been to Houston several times (brother lives in Spring) and for the life of me I couldn't think of anything THAT cool that would apply to my birthday. Second, my birthday is September 24, and my brother usually remembers this on September 23, resulting in me getting a card and present in mid-October. This amount of forethought and planning was unusual. Lastly, I haven't had a proper vacation in more than eleven years, and I was planning on taking two weeks around my birthday to go abroad. Ah well, maybe next decade.

So he called again a few days later, very excited, just to make sure I'd be able to come. Absolutely, I said.

Well kids, this is what I'll be doing next Sunday, September 18.

My amazing brother and I will be crewing the last B-25H for 30 minutes of flight time, then yours truly will get 30 minutes in an AT-6. When he told me, I was literally speechless. I've known about it since the end of June and I'm still staggered. Even now, typing this, I'm giggling like a schoolgirl.

Indeed, the Best Birthday Present Ever!!!

Thanks for all the great wishes guys. Finished flying a couple of hours ago and just got back to my brother's house after a stop for dinner.

When I get back home I'll do a little write-up with (hopefully) some pictures and video. It was, as I'm sure you can imagine, an INCREDIBLE experience. The biggest shock was the AT-6 ride. I figured that, having zero flying experience, for a 30 minute flight I'd have maybe 5-10 minutes of stick time, tops. WRONG! As soon as we were up in the air and clear of the field the pilot had me take control. I flew all the way out, then he took over for the aerobatics and ACMs. I flew us back to the field and he brought is in for final approach and landing. All told, I got to fly a vintage WWII aircraft for 20 minutes today. I still can't get my head around that!
