I'm British but I don't mind a lot of Americanisms. Evolution of the language and all that.

The thing that IS irritating is the illogical stuff. The example of 'alternate' and 'alternative' in the article is a good one. As someone commented, it is usefull to have the two words with clear and separate meanings. The use of the word 'alternate' when you mean 'alternative' doesn't suggest a dynamic evolution of the language. It just sounds ignorant. Like you have never been taught the difference.

Before anyone takes offence, I'm not using the word ignorant in a pejorative way. I'm intending the literal meaning of 'lack of knowledge'.
