link "We need to sell more comics." "What do we do?" "I know— we kill Spiderman." "Are you nuts? Our company was practically built on Spiderman!" "That's what makes it perfect. It will be a huge news story." "But fans will be furious with us. They'll say it's just another cheap stunt, like that whole Mephisto storyline." "We'll only kill him off in the Ultimate books. Real fans hate those anyway." "Hmmm
you may have something. Big buck sales, here we come!" :-P |

Technically they're killing off Peter Parker -- according to the article the "Spiderman" mantle will be taken up by someone else
Personally I like the idea: The Ultimate titles are an "alternate reality" version of the Marvelverse, and experimentation like this is long overdue. Personally I think this will kill the title, but I may pick up an ish just for it
Also I really enjoyed the Ultimate X-men title personally

I hate it when someone else "picks up the mantle". That way lies a dozen Robins. Or The Warlord killed for no good reason at all except for some ironic last words. |

Comix publishers are anal orifices. There are lots of great comics out there besides the superhero stuff. |

It will last until the writers/editors change and they decide to bring Peter back again. I'm not a fan of the "Ultimates," either. |

Well, they had little choice. They couldn't make him gay, since they are pulling that money string for the new gay marriage Xmen comic and DC is making the original Green Lantern gay and Archie comics are doing it along with everyone else, so that's getting passe already. They could have made him bisexual, that might have been a bit unique worked and gotten some press, barely. Making him an alien has been done to death, so forget that. How about a wedding? Oh wait, forget that. So not much else left to do but pull a 90s Superman on him. Will #160 have a special foil gatefold hologram cover that turns into a unicorn at night? ;-) Regardless, it will be in the .50 bin by Xmas, along with all the other modern comics. ;-) Sorry for being snarky, but there is a reason I collect and read only old pre-1990s comics. I grew tired of the gimmicks decades ago. |
