PC Bill Barker was patrolling a dangerous bridge over a swollen river in Cockermouth, Cumbria, when the bridge collapsed and he was swept away. The conditions here in Cumbria last Thursday were appalling – it was almost impossible to walk through the torrential downpour and the roads were deep in water in that town. PC Barker undoubtedly saved lives, as he stopped a number of drivers and pedestrians from using the bridge.

Please read this account of the tragedy and send your thoughts of sympathy to his family and friends.

Yes, I was reading about him earlier. Very sad news.

It's always sad when anybody dies who helps others during catastrophes.

May he rest in peace.
