Buddy of mine told me that Microsoft came out with their own anti-virus program as a free download, Microsoft Security Essentials. I checked a few reviews, and in general it seems to do the job, but so many of the sites have an anti-MS bias to them that it's hard to determine if the program is actually any good. The price is right, but is it a pain to use? Anyone have any experience with it? |

It's very easy to use, doesn't seem to throttle my computer like MacAfee or shut everything down like norton does. I started with it this Summer after hearing a tech reviewer on Canadian public TV (CBC) give it a very good review and I've been happy with it, I must say. -- Tim |

Thanks Tim. I'm using MacAfee right now, and it does seem to be slowing the computer down. |

I'm looking for alternatives, McAfee "missed" somethings then was taking 50-75% of CPU. |

I've been using it for a couple of months, since it came out of beta. It seems much less intrusive than Norton and the like. So far it hasn't caused any trouble with other software which other virus software was prone to do. My computing is low risk--I don't access websites I shouldn't, run warez, or get much spam mail, so I can't say if it's more effective than the others. (I'm a little biased: I really hate Norton and MaCaffee. I'm the guy in that my family and friends call anytime they have a problem and frequently Norton and MaCaffee are involved.) |

Any comparison to AVG Free, which I'm using now, and seems to do the job? |

I have the microsoft program on two PC's -- I put it there and replaced AVG. It seems to run a lot better, and doesnt download patches all the time. On the other hand, once I made the change I got some dodgy software on my computer. Cant say if AVG would have caught it, but security essentials certainly didnt. (The bad software was some nasty that read my address book and spammed my friends -- embedded in a utility I downloaded and ran.) |
