All of the sudden my PC is sloooow. I did a tmp file dump, defrag, ran a couple of malware scans (AdAware, Spybot search and destroy), no changes. I tried a resistry check program (Registyr Bosster), but only the "check" part seems to be free, the "fix" part i have to buy the software. Running XP Pro, SP 3 What next? |

Hard dis space? If you are running out, that could cause slowness and out of memory errors. |

Turn on "Task Manager", and see what's taking up cpu time. My security software picks the oddest times to run a scan. |

It's ALL the time. Sounds like the HD is constantly spinning Besides, most of the tasks are so cryptic, it's hard to tell what is what |

What does the memory useage look like? If the disk is grinding continuously, you could be low on memory. |

What is 'teatimer' and how do you stop it from starting up? |

I had a similar problem until my Adobe Reader updated. Just one more point to consider. |

What is 'teatimer' and how do you stop it from starting up? Part of Spybot apparently, do a search for teatimer.exe on google and you'll find a lot of people asking the same question. Seems its a bit of a memory hog too. There's a handy program I've used to diagnose misbehaving PC's called hijackthis, link its a utility that tells you everything your PC is doing, and helps identify processes that should not be running. |

Thanks jtkimmel, I'll try it, given nothing else has worked |

Couple of things: You don't mention if you checked your task manager – it's the easiest way to see if there is a process that hogs a lot of your resources. Check your event logs – you may have a service that continously tries to start up and fails. If that's the case, then you should see some indication of it in your Application or System log. Check if your anti-virus application hasn't gone apeshit. Simply shutdown your anti-virus app (preferably while offline) and see if performance improves. |
