I currently use the free versions of AVG, Comodo and Malwarebytes on my 64-bit Windows Visa computer at home. Recently, AVG has been giving me pop ups saying it will be discontinued soon. So, I will need to install new anti virus software. It seems like the user reviews on Download.com for AVG 9 are not great, what do you think? What would be a good replacemen? I'm also wondering if there is a better firewall or other recommended security software?

The free AVG subscription expires from time to time but IIRC you can go to their site and jump through a few hoops to get it renewed… still free.

AVG does seem to take up a lot of my computer's brain space though… I'd switched to it after running Norton for a while, which seemed awfully resource-greedy as well.

Avast! is better, and just as free. It's not such a memory hog as AVG currently is.

I would second Avast. It runs quietly and unobtrusively like anti virus software should.

I've used AVG for years, on my windows PC (don't need anti virus on the linux PC) but it crashed continually during install and failed.

So after reading all the reviews I have switched to Microsoft Security Essentials. Its great does not hog resources and does very well in virus tests from various reviewers.
