My friend, Dr. Debonis, just got back from Afghanistan after a year. She's a vet and was stationed in Kandahar providing care for the service dogs used by the Dutch, Germans, Americans and other Allies.

She also arranged for cooling vests to help keep the dogs healthy:

I have a cooling collar for my Frenchie. They tend to overheat in the humidity and then die of a heart attack. Fragile breed those Frenchies.

I wonder if shaving the dogs would help.

The drug dogs down in Laredo have their own little ice water tub to sit in between sniffs. Someone told me once that the hotter it is the more likely the dogs are to alert. They get to sit in the tub while agents search the vehicle rather than having to move on to the next car.

Great idea. There's probably a few human soldiers that wish they had something similar.

Not really Bill. Dogs don't have sweat glands in their skin the way humans do.

I'd be concerned about their paw pads as well.

I know they are much tougher than what we got on our own feetsies, but all the different dog shows on cable recommend that if the ground is too hot to go barefoot for an extended period of time, it is not good to walk a dog too long on it either.

Dogs are wolves, and wolves evloved during the ice age, so they are much better at handeling cold then heat, hence the fact that huskies surive outside at 30 below zero, while humans need 20 pounds specialty cloths to survice, humans are savanah animals after all,

Two very diffrent animals that seem to have become soulmates somehow.

One a ice age quadroped animal with thick fur and senses it's inviorment by the nose. with two color vision
The other a bipedel hairless ape from the savanah that sweats, have no smell(compeard to a dog) senens it's invorment though 3 color vision.

Yet no other animals on the planet seem to have formed a stronger bond
