I'm looking for a Home printer, preferably color. I'm mostly looking for some thing that is less expensive to operate (willing to pay more up front). My current printer is an HP 1220C that is close to 8 years old. 11x17 capable is nice, but not a must have.

I just paid $50 USD for ink, I expect that this will only last me a few months (slight upswing in printing needs)

I have a printer/copier from HP – F380, but there are more recent ones – and I'm delighted with it. I don't know how much HP ink is for you, but my cartridges seem to have a decent life and the quality's very good.

don't know about the US, but in the UK Kodak are making a big push with their inkjets and how inexpensive their cartridges are – I think under £10/$15 for colour and £7/$10.5 black n white (rough figures worked out on £1=$1.5)

Sue, that was for HP ink frown

Printers seem to be like razors, almost a give-away because they "get you" on the ink.

Have you considered a laser printer? I bought a Brother HL-2040 back in 2005 for about $50. USD Toner lasts a long time, and these days Office Depot carries a cheap recycled toner brand (online order only, free shipping) for under $40. USD It's supposedly long past time to replace my drum cartridge, but I'm still plugging on with no problems after saying "No, I'm not paying $110 USD for a replacement drum for a $50 USD printer!" If I ever finally have to replace it, I may just buy a new one outright.

I also have a color printer which I dedicate only to color needs (photos, game parts) and the occasional quick copy (it's a scanner too). I got it free (brand new) with my used laptop about two years ago. It's a Canon MP-160. Good printer, good scanner, but yeah, ink is still kinda pricey for it.

One of these days I may just upgrade to a color laser. The only drawback I know of is that toner tends to crack and rub off when you fold printed paper, which may not make it viable for the game printing I occasionally do.

I'll second the color laser. The price-per-page is much less than with an inkjet.
