Lots of things Michael & I don't agree about. One is cold pizza (I'm for, he against). Today I'm off work to have the car dealt with (didn't take as long as I expected) and so I'm eating lunch at home.

Do I reheat the Monte Cristo sandwich? Will a deep-fried sandwich taste OK cold?

Jay Arnold13 Oct 2009 10:06 a.m. PST

Reheat in the oven. The microwave will just make it limp and steamy. The oven should make it crisp and melty.

Cold is an unappealing option in this case.

Cold pizza if the shiz-nite.

Some cold pizza is good, some not. Traditional red sauce and pig parts pizza is no problem, but those "artisan" chicken and white sauce pizzas get one chance only.

CLDISME13 Oct 2009 11:07 a.m. PST

Farstar is correct on the pizza issue. Monte Cristos need to be eaten warm. I would shun the microwave to warm them. If the sandwich is thin enough and the cheese is thick, I would toss it in the toaster on a light setting (and keep a sharp eye on it). Otherwise a quick 30 seconds for each side on a hot skillet should work.

I'd go with the skillet; best to recreate the conditions under which it was made.

Cold Pizza comes to us from the ancient Greeks.
They called it… Ambrosia!

Black Cavalier13 Oct 2009 11:42 a.m. PST

I'd leave it in the pot nine days old.

Neotacha13 Oct 2009 11:47 a.m. PST

I used the oven; less hassle in the long run. Probably should have gone with cold, though. Ultimately I set it down to cope with laundry and it was around room temp when I got to it after all.

I don't do artisan pizzas. The odd ones with egg on them in the UK are quite strange enough. White sauce and chicken need pasta, not crust.

Room-temp pizza is ok. Cold out of the fridge is not.

Pizza only goes bad when things start growning from it. Eat fried left overs at your own discression. Fried chicken does ok. Couldn't imagine the Monte Cristo holding up.

Ahh, the Monte Cristo sandwich on the Wikipedia page doesn't look nor sound too appetizing, but the French variation, the croque-monsieur, does. And it can even have an egg on top of it (called a croque-madame).

Gee. I have lots of lunchmeat in my fridge. Maybe I should make me a Monte Cristo, that is, without deep-frying it.

So… a grilled cheese sandwich, but with meat?

Space Monkey13 Oct 2009 3:17 p.m. PST

Your grilled cheese sandwiches are battered, deep-fried and dusted with powdered sugar?
It's more like a ham n cheese sandwich made with French Toast.

Sounds simple enough, Bill. Add a fried egg on top of it, and BOOM! – you're suddenly eating at Friday's! laugh

mweaver13 Oct 2009 3:56 p.m. PST

Pizza should be eaten hot.

COld pizza is an abomination -desecrating the glory that is pizza

StarfuryXL513 Oct 2009 5:41 p.m. PST

I haven't had croque-monsieur in years (decades, even). Have to add some things to the shopping list. Mmm-mmm-mmm.

Neotacha13 Oct 2009 6:08 p.m. PST

Fair enough. I suddenly have a craving for French toast.

Whatisitgood4atwork13 Oct 2009 11:05 p.m. PST

Some things are even better cold the next day.

Open fridge. Find a slice of cold pizza, or some cold cooked sausages. Or (dare I even hope) cold home-made bacon and egg pie. It's a good day already.

Cold pizza works if it has lots of toppings and a reasonably thin base. Those appalling things sold in the chains do not qualify, hot or cold.

Kayl MacLaren14 Oct 2009 7:22 a.m. PST

Count it. Aren't people always talking about Counting Monte Cristos?

jimbeau15 Oct 2009 9:06 a.m. PST

jimbeau15 Oct 2009 9:10 a.m. PST

ok, further update: blackberry jam makes it better.

skinkmasterreturns03 Nov 2009 5:17 a.m. PST

I'd rather have a panini.
