My hard drive on my home computer has a worm, completely filled 250 giga. Anyway, can I back up the program files to a portable hard drive without infecting the portable hard drive??? Destroy the infected hard drive and install a new hard drive and reload programs from the portable hard drive???????

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Doesn't sound like a worm to me.

1. What OS are you using?
2. How do you know that your drive is full?

Get a pal to create an Linux Live disk for you. This is a CD which will run from the drive and is a full Operating system.

Ubuntu link or PCLinuxOS are good distributions to use link

If you can't burn an iso then a Linux magazine will usually have a cover DVD you can boot from.

When you have booted into Linux you can mount the internal drive and attach an external one. COpy over your files and reformat the interal drive.

This last step should be approached with caution. Many Windows PCs do not come with copies of Windows to install, they have instead a recovery partition. Ifthat is the case then do not reformat that.

lasty reinstall windows (Better yet install Linux) and of you do have a virus or worm or what have you then it should be gone

Start with a disk clean up. Then run something like spybot or adaware.

And when is the last time you defragged?

Good Lord. Not an OS I expected to hear about.

Windows 98 is so old that it normally won't support a 250GB disk. I think the max it supports is about 120GB.

The rest of the disk just doesn't exist because the OS can't handle it.

Did you download a patched FDISK to get above 120GB?

How much space is marked used?

Not easier to use if you want a new internet connection or you have a new pen drive to install…..
