Had Ataturk not led Turkey to become a republic, Ertugrul Osman would have been known as Emperor Shehzade Ertugrul Osman Effendi.

His wife, who survives him, is related to the last Afghan king.

Fascinating. In doing some quick research, Osman would've become Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in May of 1926, three months shy of his 14th birthday, upon the death of Sultan Mehmed VI. Osman's passing would've completed an 83-year reign, which I'm betting would've been a record.

Rest in peace, Mr. Osman.

It's too bad they didn't go the route of England and keep the monarchies in some of those places – it might have been a stabilizing influence. Turkey has done well, but the others, not so much.
