Thanks to a pretty nifty employer discount with AT&T, I was able to upgrade to an IPhone 3G yesterday at a very reasonable price. The order of magnitude of difference between this device and my last old-style flip phone is pretty astounding, and it will be while before I get used to all its features. The number of gamings apps is pretty remarkable, but given the sheer number its rather hard to sort through and find what I like. I downloaded a slew of free "lite" versions and have already dumped most because they just weren't what I was looking for. So, my question: can any other IPhone users here recommend any good wargaming apps? I especially prefer tactical, squad-level games, but any ideas will be welcome. Thanks in advance, Jason |

Hi, I recently got myself an IPhone and I have been playing "uniwar" – this is a strategy based game set in the future, it uses a hex style board for movement. The closest I have found so far to a wargame. An excellent FPS is "Modern Combat Sandstorm" – you are a soldier in a US infantry squad (set somewhere in the Middle East), an excellent game but not really a wargame as such. I would suggest you check out the reviews on the App Store – they are surprisingly balanced reviews. Let me know if you find any others. Have fun. Kev. |

Hmm. Interesting thought. If any good wargaming apps were available it might be enough to finally make me upgrade to an iphone. My colleagues laugh and point at my cellphone because all it does is make phone calls, sends texts, and take and send pictures and poor-quality video. It doesn't have any amusing little apps that make it look as if I am drinking a beer or playing ping pong or anything like that. They shake their heads pityingly when I say I do not want to be connected to the net wherever I am 24 hours a day, or to be able to show everyone I meet every house I have ever lived in on street view. But heck, if there was a DBA type game, or some other good wargame, available on iphone, that could change my mind. |

Thanks for the tips, Col. Spider, I will be sure to pass anything useful along. Whatisitgoodforatwork, I can sympathize with the bit about not wanting to be connected 24 hours a day. I was very resistant to this upgrade, but after using my wife's iPhone (the little tech junkie had to get one ASAP) I started to see the appeal. I really like having a usable word processor on my phone now (it is surprisingly easy to type on an iPhone), not to mention an ebook reader for my many digital books (which I formerly could only read on my laptop) and a bunch of really useful utility apps. Finally, I found a free app that's a die roller! It will roll loads of any value die you need
great for me, as I hate the act of rolling lots of die. And I if I can find a wargame or two, it will be triple bonus dollar days for me. |

I've got a co-worker that installed Civilization: Revolution on his iPhone. |

How about, and I realise this is a revolutionary use of modern mobile phones, you call a friend and arrange a game. Or am I being a luddite? |
