I've been searching for good software to rip DVD movies to put on my iPod Touch.

What's the best software out there?
Is there a Freeware version?

Amazing how difficult it is to find info via Googling…

If you have a Mac, try Handbrake.

PC here.
I've seen Cucusoft and iSofter.

My concern is will they copy my commercially purchased DVD's?
Can I get Kelly's Heroes on my iPod?

I thought iTunes would do it, but I was wrong…

Don't bother with commercial apps, you can do exactly same thing with Handbrake for Windows. You need however to install a small application called DVD43. You need to have it running in the background, if you want to convert copy-protected DVD:s.

Here's pretty decent tutorial for the steps. It's for Mac, but it works just the same on Windows. And you don't need VLC, that's what DVD43 is for.

I will pay if it works as promised and is simple.

I just have a bunch of movies I want to watch.
No porn or anime or bootlegged junk from a con, just stuff bought and paid for.

All the solutions seem to side-step the copy protection issue in their docs.

Does anyone here have experience doing this first-hand?

Thanks guys.

Yes I do, Dremel Man. I convert all of my DVD boxes, so I can watch them on my iPod Touch while commuting to and from work. Handbreak and DVD43 is really easy to use. If you have DVD43 running in the background, then insert DVD you want to convert, start Handbrake, scan your DVD in Handbrake interface, select conversion profile you want to use (use iPhone), select file that you want to convert, select destination directory and start converting. Once it's done, add converted file to your iTunes library and copy it over to your iPod.

Videora is one-shot solution for avi and divx files, but not for DVD. If you want to use it for that purpose, you will still need to rip the DVD to your harddrive before you can convert it.

As for copyright issue, it's very simple – you cannot do what you are asking for, without first bypassing the copy protection scheme on the DVD. If you don't want to do it, then buying the material you want through iTunes is your only solution.
