My laptop just went down. I'm thinking of picking up a netbook to hold me over for a while (until I see if I can fix my laptop or buy another). I really only use the computer to check email & surf the internet (TMP among other things). I am probably going to go with 10.1", 160GB hard drive & 1GB ram. Should I look for other specific features? Which brands are best? Anyone have personal experience with them? I am pretty computer ignorant so any insight into this topic is greatly appreciated! |

Dell. My girlfriend keeps having to take her Asus Book back to Best Buy to get it fixed. link |

Got a Dell in to test here at work. Looks very good, but I have not had the opportunity to test myself. The keyboard is not too small and the screen is a good size for netbooks. What little I seen of it is that it is responsive with the Atom processor. |

Dells work fine, but often come pre-loaded with all sorts of bleep. Maybe this one? link -Kle. |

Dell Mini 9 if you can still get it is reckoned to be good, Dell Mini 10 less so, but that is from the point of the people who like to put their own OS onto it. The Dell Mini 9 has a more supportable graphics chip. I use an Asus 701 4G but the Asus 10" get good reviews, despite your girlfriend's experience. She may have got a Friday afternoon job. If you are getting into that pricerange though you might want to think about a cheap "full size" laptop because if you do not care about the physical size then the price of the more fully featured Netbooks is similar to the cheaper laptops. |

Acer Aspire One is a nice machine for web browsing and mail especially with the Linux OS on it |

If you're just using it to surf the Internet and check e-mail, and you're going to upgrade to something more powerful in terms of a computer fairly soon, why not look into an iPod Touch from Apple? It has WiFi built in, a full-featured browser (Safari), a full-featured e-mail program (Mail), and you can download apps and games as well— plus have a fully featured music and video iPod. And you can carry it around in your pocket. Later, when you do buy a new computer, a netbook would become superfluous, while the Touch would still be a versatile tool. And it's only $229, so it's cheaper than a netbook, but has longer utility for you. link |

Thanks guys, went with the Dell! I may have successfully formatted my hard drive & reinstalled XP. We'll see. The NetBook will be a nice backup if/when my ancient laptop goes belly up again! |
