Just bought a new HP 64 bit laptop with (ugh) Vista. It's not connecting well with my wireless router and cable modem. I already have a Dell laptop (XP), my daughter has a Dell laptop (Vista, 32 bit), we also use an ancient Sony Vaio (XP) and an itty bitty EPC connecting reliably and without a problem.

The 64 bit HP was connecting and then loseing the connection after about 5 minutes – browser reads "connection has been reset". I brought it back to the big box store I purchased it from and of course there it worked fine, so I took it home again. I dumped Norton from it, that didn't help. I finally reset and restarted my modem and router Tuesday night and it worked just fine. I thought my problem was over.

Then last night, it simply wouldn't connect at all for my wife and I couldn't get it to connect either. Then the mouse pad stopped working. Couldn't move the mouse cursor at all after a couple of restarts. Thank goodness I'm a keyboard person! grin

I'm hoping I have an expensive lemon and I'm about to bring it back and exchange it.

Does anyone know if 64 bit systems have trouble communicating? My modem is a cable modem and my router is a relatively new (Spring some time) Cisco router.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice.

the network does not care what your OS is.

My new 64bit HP desktop with Vista has been connecting to my wireless router just fine.

dimes will get you dollars its the Vista that is the problem and will be until you up grade or down grade which ever you can do…

Did you run any software that came with the router? Have you tried connecting somewhere else (Starbucks or the library, for example)?

A few points:

1. Have you connected to your cable modem via an ethernet cable? Do you still get the problem this way?

2. Have you applied all of the updates using windows update? (Do this connected via the ethernet cable -- so you have a reliable connection!) (Note that Vista Service pack 2 was just released -- get it to see if it fixes the problem)

3. Have you looked for driver updates for your wireless card or on the HP website?

4. Somewhere in Vista there is a problem diagnosis where it looks for answers to system failures -- have you used that feature to see if there is a standard diagnosis.

5. Have you looked on the cisco website to see if there is an upgrade for the wireless router.

I had exactly the same problem on a relative's home network. The only things in common with your story are Vista and a Cisco router. I have not had a problem with my laptop anywhere else.

Thanks folks.

Vista was the problem. I connected to my modem via ethernet cable and downloaded all the stupid upgrades and it's fine now.

MS really messed up with this piece of crap. The nice thing about ordering a Dell (my last laptop and one I ordered my daughter last year) was that Dell gives it to you all updates applied. My new HP just had basic Vista and had to spend a couple of hours getting it updated.

Works fine now (so far), but what a bunch of idiots (Microsoft).

Thanks again to all.
