A controversial figure to be sure, but one who was prepared to admit he had made mistakes.

RIP

Less about admitting mistakes than trying to reset his place in history. He never admitted that his micromanaging and "I'm smarter and know more than you" attitude was one of the major problems in fighting the war in Vietnam.

I cannot disagree with that.

A common failing among Secretaries of Defense…

A common failing among Secretaries of Defense…

Also true, but I would say not quite to the same degree as McNamara

May he rest in peace. He'll have a lot of explaining to do on the other side.

A very controversial figurehead during a turbulent time in our history. Whatever shortcomings he had in this life, may Almighty God have mercy on his soul.

Would that you could perform so well in such a post at such a time in such circumstances.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER07 Jul 2009 12:51 p.m. PST

Well, I'd like to think that I wouldn't do any worse.

quidveritas07 Jul 2009 2:18 p.m. PST

No love for this guy at all.

No need to explain -- others have said it all.

I cant prove it, but I think he was behind the move from 25mm to 20mm for vietnam battles

@2bit elroy. Unlike those who fought, McNamara wasn't drafted and he could have stepped down anytime. If you want the glory, you take the responsibility for your actions. That said, there are many generals and admirals who share the blame for putting their careers above the good of the nation and the men fighting. They knew what LBJ and RM were doing wasn't working, but they wouldn't stand up and say so. There's blame for everyone, still, may he rest in peace.

No love here, either.
