Since Saturday, I've been having a problem with my McAfee Security System. Every so often, I get an alert that says that my computer isn't protected, so I activate the Control Center and I see that two areas are affected: Internet & Network and the Parental Controls. The last one I never bothered activating, since I'm the only one using my computer, and it would seem that it's been activated for me. Anyway, I select the "Fix" button and it immediately corrects itself to where I'm protected
.until the next alert. So, do I have an issue or not? |

NO, I get that all the time. I think it may be DHCP related |

I get that intermittently, too. In my case, the solution is to reboot the computer. |

Well, it's nice to know that the problem may not be bug-related. Sounds more like an inherent "hiccup" of sorts. Thanks, fellas. Saber6, "DHCP"? Sorry, I'm a layman. |

Could it be related to the "conficker" worm/virus? The wife's computer had some issues w/ stuff getting turned off. Like automatic update and the firewall. Have you run a scan lately? |

Same here. It happens only once and a while. Just a "Fix" or "Confirm your account" settles everything. |

I scan every day, Lord Hypnogogue. So far, nothing's turned up. Like Bill said, I may have to reboot it. |

DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol For a computer or device to accessable over a TCP/IP network (Which is what the Internet is) it must have a TCP address. This is 12 numbers broken into 4 groups of 3, numbering from 1 to 255 in each group. This address has to be unique within your subgroup for each device. You can have a static IP address, which never changes, like 192.168.20.1 or you can have a DHCP address, which means that there is a device somewhere acting as a DHCP server, monitoring the network, and when it see's a device that is set up for DHCP get onto the network, hands a temporary IP address to that device. The DHCP server keeps track of what IP address are handed out and for how long they will have that address, for that DHCP server subgrouping. |

Ah- that makes sense- I have AOL and McAfee, and every few days have to reconfirm my subs. I understand that AOL handle IPs differently to other ISPs, so it is likely mine is changing. The galling thing is that it is the McAfee/AOL tie in subscription- you would think that they worked that through when they came together! |
