Did it start with Yahoo? Or was it Google? Blogging? I have the news on in the background. They are talking about North Korea, and how "tweets" are coming in on Twitter. Why do all innovations sound like they were named after cartoon characters? |

Because it's fun. Way better than those latin compound names. You are such a no fun grumpy guy. DO you yell at kids to get off your lawn? -- Tim

I blame NASA. They used to name extra-terrestrial objects with cryptic codes like SN1987A or mythic beings (Odysseus) or historical people in the fields of the humanities or sciences. But then
They landed the rovers on Mars and started naming objects with cartoon characters like Scooby Doo and Shaggy. |

It isn't NASAs fault. They have to name things that people will get. If you call some new program Heliopolis then people will not be able to remember it, but call it La-La and they will understand. "Oh, how cute, it's named after the yellow teletubby!" |

But it is more fun to blame the government rather than the dumbing-down of the masses. |

I'm just glad that no one wanted to point out the fact that I knew which one was the yellow teletubbie. |

I didn't feel qualified to comment on the correctness of your assertion. ;) |

Does anyone remember one of Google's early search engine competitors (before Google became so big) was called Oingo? |

.says the man called "OFM" Anyway, because it works. Tons of bucks flow to marketing companies, focus groups cross the country, naming things is not that off the cuff. Including the cute story about how they made up the name. |

They aren't "dumb". They only "seem" dumb to those who are. Regards, the Gorb |

So,
the obvious question is John, what would you call them?? Pick a product, give us the 'better name' and lets 'run it up the flagpole'. Oh, and don't forget it has to be a name you CANNOT already find by a google search. |

Then we have Geekbox, and The Geek Squad (panned as Nerd Herd on Chuck), and Totally Awesome (computers). The list of geeky names abounds. It's because geeks are smart, so they start good 'puter techie businesses: but, they are also geeks and nerds for a reason: their sense of humor is sophomoric and lame, even childish. Hence, the stupid (albeit, fun) names they give themselves and their techie services

Actually, IT folks don't do this
marketing does
They name the products to make them sound, "hip, edgy and bang on"
Like Sci Fi becomes Syfy
Marketings job is to make them look and sound interesting and edgy to simply get them to sell
doesn't matter if it's a piece of crap. Thats for tech support to handle. Marketings job is to make you want it, and sell it to you. Then like Pontius Pilate, they wash their hands of the whole affair and search for the next sucker. |
