I just came back from Gettysburg and am thinking of getting into Civil War Reenacting a little…

I picked up a de-farbed Enfield and the leather kit to accompany it…

My question is, "what is the purpose of the piece of sheepskin in the cap box?"

Also, "Dirty Billy's Hats" is a cool store!

To keep the caps from pouring out.

The cap box, that is. Dirty Billy's goal is to keep the caps pouring out, and he does a mighty nice job of it…

OK – that was good :-)

Is Dirty Billy's rep good in reenactment circles (accuracy wise)?

He certainly seemed to know his stuff to me…

THANKS!

Yes he is known for being pretty accurate.

If I may offer some advice. If you haven't already done so, I would find a unit to join first and talk to them before buying any more kit.

Many units have certain requirements for their member's gear. They also usually have a list of recommended vendors. This will prevent you from buying gear that might not meet their standards and save you money in the long run.

Keith,

Thanks for the advice… This was sort of a spur of the moment thing but you are right of course…

I went with common denominator stuff but could still have problems with unit-specific requirements…

Thanks for you advice!!!

James;
If you want to ask some more "newbie reenactor questions", shoot me a PM or email at m_murphy_1963ATyahooDOTcom.
And if you can make it up to G'burg next week, the 145th is kicking off…

Defarbed Enfield?…Who made it amd how much did you pay for it?
