Mikhail "Mishka" Thomas, born 5.41am 17/4/2008, weighing 7lb 6.5oz (3.36kg) Galina started labour at about 3pm yesterday (the induction pills had no effect, it was the pineapple that kicked it off!) and struggled through contractions every 2 minutes until Mishka finally arrived at 5.41 this morning. So proud of them both. She went through her 14 hour labour with no painkillers, only requesting them in the last hour (by which time it was too late). As her waters had gone 2 days earlier, he's currently in neo-natal and expected to remain there for another 24 hours while they check his blood sugar and monitor for infection. Hoping to be able to bring them both home late Saturday (so no, I won't be at Salute). Anastasia finally has her little brother. It was that or a rabbit. :-) Geoff |

I guess that's a fine reason to miss salute. Make it to Historicon, then? BTW, rabbits are easier to clean up after. |

Named after one of those famous Mikhails? (I was particularly fond of Mikhail's Navy.) |
GeoffQRF | 17 Apr 2008 3:02 p.m. PST |
Nah, named cos I wanted him to have a Russian/Ukrainian first name and I liked Misha/Mishka – little bear :-) Thomas is one of his grandfather's names, and also his great-great grandfather's name. We did have Ilya in there for a while, because Galina quite enjoys NCIS (McCallum, Man from UNCLE), but Thomas Ilya wasn't going to work when his surname begins with a T

GeoffQRF | 17 Apr 2008 3:11 p.m. PST |
"that's a good healthy size" My wife may disagree with that
she appears to have burst a blood vessel in her eye with the effort (minor). Somehow I suspect she feels it's far from a 'good size' !!! :-D |

Hope you are all well
.Remember sleep is for wimps :-) What will be his 1st army??? MH :-) |
GeoffQRF | 17 Apr 2008 3:13 p.m. PST |
I got law exams – no time for sleep anyway. Chilredn under 6 always get to pick their on first armies. Anastasia's 'Narnia' HOTT army is getting quite scary. |

she appears to have burst a blood vessel in her eye with the effort (minor) I'll correct that, before someone picks me up on it! "she appears to have burst a blood vessel in her eye (minor) with the effort (far from minor)"!!! |

Conratulations to you both
but never mind what he weighs, what SCALE is he??? Graham |
GeoffQRF | 18 Apr 2008 2:05 p.m. PST |
At the moment, about 1/8 scale. I think the proportions are all a bit wrong, as he looks to have a big head but very small hands and feet

Well done Geoff. My fist was 7lbs 14oz and we've been told the next is already that weight, and has another month to bake! Mommy is not thrilled by that prospect. |

My fist was 7lbs 14oz I'm hoping that should read first

My little lad started off about 1/8th to
..now he is far too big, almost as tall as me and he is only eight years old.!! Graham |
GeoffQRF | 19 Apr 2008 9:29 a.m. PST |
Yep, scale screep in everything. Mishka is still in the hospital. He had a touch of hypothermia so spent a day under a sun lamp. As there was a delay before birth he's also been on a 48 hour course of antibiotics 'just in case of infection'. Hmmm. Nice. Just got the all clear on the infection today. However he's also hypoglycemic [sp] (low blood sugar), so is on 3 hourly blood monitoring with regular formula top-ups at the moment. Plus he woke up yellow this morning (normal, apparently) so now has his own purple lamp.
maybe tomorrow
(just off back up there to see them now. Wouldn't mind, but the blooming car park costs me nearly 4 quid every time!) |
GeoffQRF | 20 Apr 2008 2:09 p.m. PST |
Just an update We now appear to have stabilised the blood sugar, and he got the all clear from the jaundice today, provided he can manage to control it himself without the UV lamp. So, no sleeping in the sun tonight, test at 9am tomorrow, results between 12 and 2
SO, fingers crossed he can come home tommorrow. Which is a weird sort of positive omen, as tomorrow was his official due date :-D |

Hmm
Didn't know this thread existed, but have found three venues to congratulate you on. You must be busy ;-). So congrats again! We should get together with The Dungeon Delver and try to determine if this is a contagious disease. Ours is our first biological in 20 years
;-) No Misha, Mishka. Seems everyone gets the "ka" diminutive over there. Ask Vika, she'll tell you ;-). Though at 14, she tells her friends to call her "Tori". Truly have we made her an Amerikanka Dyavushka. ;-) Get some rest before your exams! (says the guy that hasn't slept more than six hours in a row since Nathaniel was born). Don. |
