Just wondering if the current issues with gas prices and the possible summertime increase will affect your travel plans to events? I'm still scheduling myself for 145th Gettysburg, but that is the only MAJOR large scale event I will be doing this year
A ton of minor "one dayers" though

Between my increased work load and gas prices, I'm probably only making it to a fraction of the events I have in the last year. Typically I got out to the big fair at Ft. Frederick (F&I, RevWar) in western Maryland, but the amount of gas I would use pretty much rules it out this year. Luckily, in the last year I've moved closer to some of the bigger events in norther New Jersey so they're still penciled in for now. |

Given that just about anything is a 2+ hour drive, no. Any event requires a fill-up before I leave town. |
| avidgamer | 04 Apr 2008 8:57 a.m. PST |
Nope. I haven't driven very far to events in the past few years. I used to go to events 12 hours away but with the family getting bigger and busier that cuts into my time. I travel shorter distances just in case I need to get home quicker. |

Nope. I generally hate driving and that is more a deterrent to doing stuff than the cost. |
| Go0gle | 04 Apr 2008 9:19 a.m. PST |
Yeah. Skipped out on going to a couple gaming conventions because I can't afford the trip anymore. Went from $40 USD in gas one-way to $120 USD over the last three years. Add raising motel rates, meals, and entry prices
and it's an easy $500 USD just to attend a weekend event anymore. Totally sucks. |
| nycjadie | 04 Apr 2008 9:23 a.m. PST |
I hate driving as well. Time is more precious than the $1.00 USD a gallon increase in gas prices over the last several years. |

Most events are 5+ hours for me so the limiting factors remain work and family life. Gas price at this point wouldn't even be a secondary consideration. Mark |

As an interesting function of gas price and travel time, the discount fares on Southwest make Recon in Orlando look better to me every year. This year work interferes so maybe next year. Mark |

The price of gas has even stopped me from going to play at the local gaming club 17 miles away. also the cost of minis has just about stopped my mini buying too. |

Actually I just signed up for Origins, the first time in four years that I can actually make it both in terms of time AND money. That and Drums Along The Maumee are the only long distance runs I'm planning right now. If I can Advance The Colors in September. Other than that just local stuff. Time is my big killer right now, money somewhat less so. I'm hoping to make a couple local air shows and music festivals before the summer leaves but we'll see on that. |

Yes, it is having an impact, since it isn't just the price of gasoline that is getting out of sight. Anyone checked out the inflation at the fast food joints lately? The old $3.00 USD – $3.99 USD meal deals are now going for $6.00 USD – $7.00 USD plus. I suspect that hotel prices, and other expenses are similarly inflated as well. |
| Go0gle | 04 Apr 2008 10:29 a.m. PST |
Time isn't so much a factor
once I get a weekend or so. Normally have to drive an hour or three to get to anything resembling actual "modern" civilization anyhow
another two or three hours is easy. (Most fun I've had in years was a four day drive from Corpus Cristi to home here on the Oregon coast) |

In a way. The price of air fare has gone up so much we are skipping events we used to fly to in favor of events within an 8 hour drive. Even with a rental car it is cheaper than flying. |

If you think your prices are bad, fuel is currently £1.05 GBP to £1.10 GBP per litre in the UK, that's about $2.20 USD US, or in the region of $8 USD per US gallon! I need to go back to a diesel engine, 65 mpg was wonderful compared to the rotten 40 mpg my petrol version is getting. |
| Ron W DuBray | 04 Apr 2008 2:45 p.m. PST |
yea but you can drive from one side of the UK to the other on one tank of gas or less :) depending on the car and where you are on your wee island.lol |

You can complain all you want about the price of fuel – where I live – you can't get to a town with more than 100,000 people unless you drive at least 7 hours. Makes going to a convention of any size a long weekend proposition. And there aren't any real "re-enactments" out here either – well there aren't unless you count the regular after hours brawls at the bars as re-enactments of bar fights in the wild west. |

State of employment will have more of an effect. The price of gas would add at most $20 USD to a trip that I usually spend hundreds of bucks on anyway. |

As an interesting function of gas price and travel time, the discount fares on Southwest make Recon in Orlando look better to me every year. This year work interferes so maybe next year. Next year you will have to fly into Orlando, rent a car, then drive to Cocoa Beach at probably $4 USD a gallon gas. Plus you'll pretty much be forced to stay at the con's $100 USD a night hotel instead of having the option of staying at a much cheaper hotel right next door or down the street. Plus you'll be held captive for food instead of walking across the street to many cheaper eating establishments. All in all, Recon and Hurricon will be much more expensive for most people for at least two years. And don't even mention how many local Orlando gamers are complaining about the move to the beach! |
| Mousy Tung | 05 Apr 2008 8:49 a.m. PST |
In case folks don't know, Recon and Hurricon will not be in Orlando for 2009 & 2010 and maybe beyond. |

I have to say yes. I live in London, and I had planned to go to a coule of events in N England and N Wales, but diesel is now at £1.17 GBP per litre around here (£5.31 per UK gallon). So I've had to scrub the idea of going to Lindisfarne (650 miles and about £120.00 GBP for fuel) or Amlwch (570 miles and about £100.00 GBP for fuel). Instead I'm going to fly to the west of Ireland for a show there. Now, would someone explain how INCREASING my air travel helps global warming ? :-) Pete |
| Guthroth | 03 May 2008 11:33 a.m. PST |
Update, around here diesel is now £1.24 GBP per litre

Event plans? what event plans? Oh, you mean the ones I might make if gas wasn't going upandupandup
. |
| Guthroth | 13 Jun 2008 2:06 a.m. PST |
News It's now £1.33 GBP per litre. That's up 7% in 6 weeks. |
