I need to enter the 21st century and get a bluetooth headset to replace my wired one. I don't want to spend a bazillion dollars, but don't want ot get too crappy a set, either.

Any recommendations for certain manufacturers or models?
I've checked CNet and their ratings don't really make sense to me (like knocking down a model becasue the button is too small), so I'd like som einput from people who actually use the things….

Thanks in advance

Consumer Reports just did an issue on that:

Their Best Buy in bluetooth mono headsets (at $35) is:

Jabra BT500

Please please please don't wear the 'tooth when you're just walking around in public.

People who do that look like retarded Borg wannabes.

I just don't want you to be mocked, is all.

Cheers

I use a Samsung model that features a little hard case/recharger. That's what sold me on it. I've used Jabras and Motorollas and both failed due to problems with the charger plugging directly into the headset. One headset (an almost $200 USD Jabra" snapped in half at the point that the charger plugged in and the other just decided it wasn't going to charge anymore due to a minute dent in the charging port.

I've had this Samsung now for two years and it's going strong. The cord plugs into the case and the earpiece drops in to charge. The case also protects it from damage when it's in my pocket – I don't wear it just walking around because I too think that looks kind of gizmo-tentious.

Might help to mention the model number: WEP200. It was $80 USD when I bought it, but you can find it now for $50 USD or $60. USD

Sigh. I'm still looking for an over-the-head Bluetooth model with a boom mic. I wear glasses and those stupid "on ear" things are MURDER on me…

I'm probably just going to have to pay to have my car wired so it can do a Bluetooth connection with my Blackberry.

I wear mine alot while working. I can push a shopping cart and 'pretend' to shop, all while talking and watching thieves, without having to hold the dumb phone.

I also use it while painting (sometimes) and scenery making (sometimes).

What looks stupid, is when you use the wired headsets and hold the phone in one hand and the microphone up to your mouth in the other hand. Or, talk so loud that everyone can here how important you think you are. Or keep repeating your self over and over without realising or accepting that your bluetooth is a crappy model that allows only you to hear yourself, or…

Remember though, if you're in California, you have to start using them come July 1st.

MMitchel – I'm the same way with the over the ear models. They don't play well with glasses. I used to be a firm believer in boom mics, too, but the last couple of "in the ear" headsets I've had have actually sounded clearer than the (wired) boom mic models I've owned – tested it out by having my wife call the house phone using my cell.

The in ear models aren't perfect, either. I get on conference calls that last more than an hour or two and I switch to speaker phone – my ear gets sore after much more than that.

Lemme upgrade you!

MMitchell/AAG,

I too wear glasses – I've been using a Plantronics Voyager 510 mobile headset. Good sound pick up (too good some say) and good fit over the ear with the glasses.

I did hear from somebody who works in telecommunications that he got an internal memo at work strongly discouraging the use of such headsets for prolonged use.

I recommend the Plantronics in-ear model. Can't see the actual #, sorry. But I do recall it was well rated because I did the research a year ago when I bought it. The over-ear things are a pain and probably cause more car accidents than they solve.

Hello,

I'm an HVAC/R mechanic and have used the Motorola set while working. That means, on roofs, in attics, under houses, while driving, actually talking while working. What a concept. The only problem was I never got a break. All ways being in com is not such a good thing, unless you ask my boss that is. Really this one is great.

Cheers,

JB
