Well here is a first ( to my knowledge): I run the Crimean War Wargame yahoo site
link
and, like most hosts, I require all but solid users to have their messages approved so as to keep out the auto SPAMers. Now I get the following clever message requesting approval which seemed at first blush to be OK until I figured that it was just too cute and looked at the website he was touting. Yup, porn. SO now we have to REALLY read the incoming for screening. Be advised. What a pain,

Hello,

A message has been sent to the CrimeanWargame group from

Seems completely obvious spam to me. There is no wargames specific info there.

Klebert L Hall07 Nov 2007 12:25 p.m. PST

Seems like automatically rejecting people who spell like that would solve the problem.

Yup. Caught this on the NJMGS site. I immediately banned him.

Ummm….her.

the trojan bunny07 Nov 2007 12:34 p.m. PST

I saw this show up on a few groups this morning. Definitly spam.

Grizwald07 Nov 2007 12:37 p.m. PST

Bit obvious isn't it? "hotornots" "ratemypic" ??

Obvious spam to me. Shame on you for falling for it, David <wags finger at David> grin

BTW, I prefer to approve applicants to join. If there's nothing in the comments, or the comments look silly, I disapprove.

Condottiere07 Nov 2007 1:47 p.m. PST

Yup, porn.

Not really porn. And, yes…I looked!!!!

Yoricke07 Nov 2007 1:47 p.m. PST

I just want to point out the irony of condeming spam sites while actually posting the link your complaining about.

It didn't get past the vigilant watch on PirateWargames.
Another tot of rum all 'round.

I deleted it too on the 10mm NG. (I am an alternate moderator and it came up on my screen for approval to post.)

Caught it on the BackofBeyond discussion group too I run and banned the poster. What I do is let anyone join so folks can browze but newbies posts are moderated. When I saw the post I knew I had a spammer and zap!

geudens08 Nov 2007 12:18 a.m. PST

Just found it waiting to be approved in my Antwerp Fusiliers Yahoo group as well. Perhaps interesting to mention that it is a closed group where both membership and messages have to be approved, so it isn't your average day spam, I guess.

the netspeak is a clue.

John the OFM08 Nov 2007 6:33 a.m. PST

I was set to approve it, because of the name, "games_wargaming", until I read the message. Not a single word about grog or hallyards or clewing up the fore t'gans'l shrouds.
I didn't follow the link, but went to ban it, and it was gone.
It seems my First Mate Roderick had beat me to it.

The name was cute and showed that there was some thought put into this SPAM attack, and wasn't just a robot.

Delthos08 Nov 2007 7:27 a.m. PST

Bah, there wasn't any thought put into it. They just used the category the yahoo group is in to the create the id using a robot. I got it on the terrainmakers group the other day as well. Its under Games and the subcategory wargaming. It's really not any thought at all.
