::sniff:: a year ago on this day (well, plus seven hours from now), I was in my kit and going out the door to play in the battle with c. 2,000 other geeks. It seems like half a decade ago, and only a couple of months ago, at the same time. Anyway, feeling a bit "homesickly", if that makes any sense….

Crikey, was that a year ago? I really enjoyed your diary..

geeks?

I bet you didn't get taunted much…at least while you were still armed & armoured! :)

That's the first time I saw those pictures. Nice. Makes me wish I was in England where I could get involved in something like that.

I was there as a spectator. It was pretty spectacular seeing that many re-enactors. Most years it is a lot smaller, only 2 or 3 hundred. Last year was a special anniversary…'06.

Roll on 2016!

I'll be 100 on the 1000 year anniversary, and by jolly, I'll be there wielding a battle-axe!

My family and I are not long back from this year's event…my son is now convinced that he wants to take up reenactment as a hobby!! I mean…really…wargaming's bad enough..but dressing up…????

Seriously though [just in case some of those blokes with axes are reading this!] it was a great day out with some impressive stuff going on both in the final battle and the displays earlier in the day…the cavalry charges against the infantry certainly gave the impression of leaving little room for error.

The assorted Normans and Saxons in the camp were also very friendly and happy to chat which more than impressed my son!

Most impressive pictures. My congratulations to all participants for their great turn-out.

Just seen this thread.

"I was there" in 2006 and 2007. MInd you I have been at all the Hastings re-enactments since 1984 – that's 5 Major ones and 12 smaller ones.

Nothing feels quite the same as standing on the ground where ……

Zinkala where are you ? I bet I know a group near enough to play with ….

Alastair, where abouts are you in Surrey ? My group is based near Heathrow, I game at a club in Egham, and I can easily find some other Surrey based guys if you want to meet them.

But Merlin,

FIIW you have a memory that you can keep for ever. I doubt I'll ever get there.

Guthroth, I'm in Saskatchewan, Canada right on the Montana border and not far from North Dakota. I'm interested to see if there really is any re-enactment groups with 5-600 km of me. I know of a group in Calgary but that's 800 km from here.

Daffy Doug15 Mar 2008 10:13 a.m. PST

I remember a few guys from Canada in 2006. But I couldn't tell you where they were from IN Canada.

dapeters:

"FIIW"? that's new. Did you mean, "for what it's worth" (FWIW? :) Well, those memories are worth a LOT, you're right there….
