I've just bought a dvd recorder with a HDD for the first time. If I want to put a recorded programme from the hard drive onto a dvd the instruction book says I can choose any of those above. Please can someone tell me does it matter which I choose?
In particular in terms of a) picture quality
b) the likelihood that the dvd will play ok on someone else's dvd player if I lend it to them.

All are OK, DVD+R is best for compatibility with older PC drives

The rw's work with most dvds,I use these to record stuff for my kids to use in portable machines during car journeys.
The r's have to be 'finalised' before any other machine can read them.

I find the DVD-R has the highest compatibility with stand alone DVD players. DVD+R is next best but has some compatibility issues.

Some DVD manufacturers supply a downloadable utility which will allow you to override the DVD+R 'Booktype' field so the player thinks it is a DVD-R to improve compatibility.
