Until recently one could play music on my computer just by popping in a cd, now it doesn't. I've also discovered while I could get mp3 to play, now it's no luck. Trying to get a song to download and play produces nothing but a message "ordinal 2101 could not be located in the dynamic link library RX.dll." This happens for both trying to run a CD as well as the mp3 thing too.

Can anyone suggest how to trouble shoot this on my aunt's and mother's computer?

I get sound through Youtube, so I know the audio isn't totally dead.

thanks

Jim

What version of Windows? What program do you use to play your music?

XP and in the past I just popped in a disc and got music. Most odd.

This is interesting as we had exactly the same problem last night.

Not only that I used to be able to watch DVD's on the computer but that doesent work either now?

Do you have a real computer or a Windows moster?
If you have a real computer check Mac System Preference to make sure your sound was not accidently turned off.

Since the error message is producing a lot of nothing in my research, I would try some general approaches (not necessarily in this order):

1) Check the version of Windows Media Player on that PC. If it's less than 11 (the current), try installing the current version and see what happens.

2) Do a full virus and spyware check. If that PC isn't running antivirus, download the free version of AVG and run it immediately.

3) Did they just install anything new right before the problem cropped up? If so, uninstall that and see what happens.

4) Does the Event Viewer show you anything interesting?

Googling "Ordinal 2101" there is what appears to be a suspiciously similar error message -- the text is very close but for "Px.dll", not "Rx.dll". Some are foreign language links though which I can't read; the English language links are not informative.

They seem to relate to the error occuring after download of a media player or updates for one. If you've done that recently you might remove it and see what happens.

Also it pops up marketing blurbs for registry cleaners and malware removers which -- if the targeted marketing is not way off -- implies those may help to clearn out what is causing that error (malware or registry corruption).

You could confirm the optical drive's settings haven't changed from the behavior you want. On XP, in an Explorer view of My Computer, if you right-click on the optical drive and choose Properties, there is an AutoPlay tab; that is where you set what it is supposed to do when a CD is inserted.
