There are various "Greys" out there in wool. Medium Grey, Cadet Grey, Atlanta Grey, and Richmond Grey to name a few. However from what I have seen in the reenacting field, Richmond Grey seems to be rarer than the rest.
Why?
Does anyone know how common/rare units/soldiers were equipped with wool of this color?

It depends on when during the war you're talking bout, but I would say mid war it was very common, and units requisitioned entired battalion issues of these jackets. The Confederate unit all in the same jacket was not as uncommon as you might think. As to reenactors, you need to keep in mind that everyone supplies their own (not battalion issues), and even those with rules as to colors and styles sometimes go with fads. That's why you'll see units of 'hardcores' all in those pale grey (almost white) jean cloth uniforms.
