Brandenburger Tor.

O.K. This may be seen as a bit late. But from October last year.

I was given a small newspaper report, that on the 200th anniverssary of Napoleons entry into Berlin, there would be a small partade and a re-enactment of the handing of the keys of Berlin to this Napoleon character.

I put up the following post on;

Brandenburger Tor 26/10/06?

Tagesspiegel29/07/06, Seite 10. "Napoleon Reitet wieder".

„Napoleon rides again. On 26th October, on the 200th anniverssary, the triumphant troops in their historic uniforms, and full baggage train again march through the Brandenburger Tor." (From thr news paper).

My question.

"How about kidnapping Napoleon?

Was any one here asked if they would take part?. Or, do they mean by "Historical uniform" something that came from a fancy dress shop, complete with plastic Pikelhaube, Huptmann von Köppenick toy moustache, and latex sword?"

One thing led to another. The three Berlin Artillery regiments, the Kürmärkischer Landwehr and others, got together, and took command.

The results of a successful campaign.

"Zeitungsberichten nach haben bis zu 52.000 (!!!) Zuschauer die Strassen zwischen Tiergarten, Brandenburger Tor, Pariser Platz, Unter den Linden, Lustgarten, Französischer Dom gesäumt.

In Berlin kam der Verkehr quasi zum Erliegen."

News paper reports say there were (according to the police), 52,000 zuschauer between Tiergarten, Brandenburger Tor, Pariser Platz, Unter den Linden, Lustgarten, and Französischer cathederal..

The traffic in Berlin was at a virtual stand still.

The march it's self was about 15 kilometers, through the center of Berlin, with about 200 soldiers from all over Europe taking part. French, Prussians, Russians, Austrians.

It was the first time that any one, that was not the Bundeswehr, were allowed to march through the Government quarter, coming straight past the Reichstag, and onto Brandenburger Tor, with fixed bayonety and drawn swords, since the end of the second world war.

Somebody's always marching through that damned gate!

Last month, it was a big Falun Gong group, protesting oppression at the hands of the Chinese, while a bunch of Chinese tourists looked on and snapped photos!

Ha ha ha. I think that drummer boy in the last photo must have had eye holes drilled into his shako so he could see.

Aha. Afraid that was actualy my fault. I sat on his just before parade, and he had to borrow one.

Must remember to apologize. · huh?

Any one in area the last weekend in July, there is a multi period event on at Zitadelle Spandau.

Maxshadow18 Jun 2007 3:32 a.m. PST

Thats funny!
Do you make your own or get them made?

Max

The hobby is basically self sufficient. We even have a cannon maker! Clothing is either self made (O.K, O.K, my Wife may read this it is WIFE made), or there are various people that will make it for you. All of them fellow re-enactors.

You could get yourself kitted out in full, for any of the major regiments, in about a month. Maybe less for the likes of the Lützowers or Landwehr regiments.

Shoes are, as with most periods, the most difficult to obtain.

Hey Ragnar, I was talking with some of the guys at Kaub last month and they said that their howitzer was actually cast from the scrap of an old Russian tank after WW2?? They also said that every so many years they have to take it to get "inspected" by some government agency that certifies its safety. Do you know anything about this?

von Scharnhorst19 Jun 2007 2:22 a.m. PST

Aye. We have two cannon, Albert, that is made from a T-34 barrel, and Fredrika (THIR spelling, not mine), that is made from an old T-55 barrel. There are two or three places around that cast from scratch. All periods. Well, all black powder periods any way.

We have six active and two or three inactive cannons, and howitzers.

They have to be re proofed every five years, and fired live once per year, we go to Beelitz. In fact we have a live fire this weekend coming.

Kaub…??? Not uis I don't think. Could be the Lützowers, 1st Garde Artillery, or the Kürmärkische.(More likely).

We are; 6pfündige Fußbatterie Nr16, der Brandenburgischen Artilleriebrigade, von Spreuth.

Tool bar bottom left under the picture, An Arrow symbol on the immediate left of the "run time bar".

Maxshadow20 Jun 2007 5:38 a.m. PST

Ok. Thats the sort thing I was looking for, some reason I'm not getting that tool bar. Oh well never mind. Was it good?

von Scharnhorst21 Jun 2007 6:41 a.m. PST

Very "French", as usual. The rest of the world seems to forget that they were not fighting themselves. Lets see more Prussians, Austrians and Dutch….Oh and Brits, I suppose.
