I have never heard 'festoon' used in this way before. I thought it meant : fes·toon feˈsto͞on/ noun a chain or garland of flowers, leaves, or ribbons, hung in a curve as a decoration. synonyms: garland, chain, lei, swathe, swag, loop "festoons of paper flowers" |

Perhaps you mean 'Gabions"? Definition of gabion. : a basket or cage filled with earth or rocks and used especially in building a support or abutment. More likely I'm just wrong. |

According to the Oxford Dictionary the meaning is as per the OP, but… I'm warming to this use in the particular context of tabletop wargames. Why shouldn't we have a more poetic and precise term to describe those miscellaneous scenic odds and ends that set the historical scene for our games; another addition to our vocabulary of specialist jargon? |

Thanks chaps. Gabion is the accepted term and you are correct. However as you would all recognise it as such being well versed wargamers, I decided to make use of another term as it is from fantasy Flintloque. I own an original copy of Drinkwater's 'Siege of Gibraltar' and in it the term Festoon is used for siege Gabions. A more poetic effect from a less literal time. GBS alternative-armies.com |

Well, cool, now I can festoon my games with festoons. I like it. Except wrong scale but others make gabions in 15 mm, pardon, festoons in 15 mm. |

My pleasure. I did catch some flack on less civilised forums for the word but here; acceptance and meaning. Enjoy your gaming. GBS |
