For people like me who have no idea what this is about, it took me some time to find on the website that these are for
the Spanish Moroccan Rif War in the 1920's, a war I had never heard of.

Great work from Richard Ansell. I'm looking forward to their release and the next set which, I assume, will be Spanish.

Pizzagrenadier03 Apr 2009 8:53 a.m. PST

It's also a war we have a free supplement for!

Look for the Rif War as a free PDF in the list in that link.

Very cool miniatures, I like Ansell's style. What's next in this line of minis, anyone know?

"It's also a war we have a free supplement for!"

And a very good supplement it is too.

Figs look great. This'll be a range to watch, methinks.

Nice looking figures.

"What's next in this line of minis, anyone know?"

From their catalog page:
"We will switch between Rif and Spanish production in batches of, most probably, four packets."

I'm assuming that the next four packs will be Spanish infantry. The provisional list looks to be quite thorough.

Now, we just need to know how to order, when they will be ready and how to pay. We should make Rif-Raf a happy company.

andysyk03 Apr 2009 11:11 a.m. PST

The next four packs will be the first four codes in the Spanish list. Two packs of riflemen, LMG advancing and firing pack and Command pack. These will have sunhat heads but seperate Ros kepi and pillbox heads will be available for converting them.
Then it will be four packs of RIF and so on…. but later releases will not be strictly in catalogue order.
Thanks for the interest.

Very nice looking Andy, well done mate.

Anyone wondering about gaming in the Rif may like to take a look at TooFatlardies who have a wargamers guide to the conflict, written by Richard something…… :-)

PTCohn03 Apr 2009 1:27 p.m. PST

Yes, that Richard something did an excellent job on the guide!
I highly recommend it.

WillieB04 Apr 2009 9:28 a.m. PST

Absolutely agree about Richard's Riff Wars guide. Excellent material.

The figures look great and I can't wait to order them. Some or even most, will do double duty in the Spanish Civil war as well, for which they are also very suitable.

The sunhats were still worn in the SCW and the earlier (Spanish) equipment will very accurately portray the rather shabby state of the Spanish regular army in 1937.

The Riffians can be used as Moroccan auxilaries and then there are the Riff Wars itself of course.

Hope this range sells really well, in fact so well that Andy considers doing the French part of the Riff Wars as well :-)

These look just like some WW2 soldiers I saw in a movie, recently -- "Two Women"

dualer05 Apr 2009 1:29 a.m. PST

The first greens look excellent, looking forward to the first Spanish figures especially. A good excuse to re-read Arturo Barea's "The Forge".

dualer05 Apr 2009 11:06 a.m. PST

Followed by "The Track" and "The Clash", collectively "The Forging of a Rebel". Anybody reccommend anything else in english, on the Rif War?

PTCohn05 Apr 2009 1:01 p.m. PST

It's fairly expensive, when you can find a copy, but quite detailed:
"The Betrothed of Death", Jose E. Alvarez, Greenwood Press, ISBN 0-313-30697-4.

kingscarbine07 Apr 2009 3:13 a.m. PST

Very nice figs.
