Those are really nice. I especially like the chariots.

They do look very nice. Saw them in the flesh…er…metal at Cold Wars.

Keraunos07 Apr 2010 6:23 a.m. PST

Bleeped text. I just stared on a different dark age army.
they would have been perfect. maybe next year

Landorl07 Apr 2010 6:33 a.m. PST

Did they really use an "H" shield? I've never seen anything like it before. The figs look good, and I am excited to see the range expanding.

doc mcb07 Apr 2010 6:54 a.m. PST

Note, as well, that there's new orcs and new command packs for the wicked beasts under Druid's Children: the Rebels.

Evidence of the "H" Shield comes from an engraving on a sarcophagus. Not sure where. I only found one reference to it online.

Evidence of square shields come from stone engravings found in Orkney.

I suspect that the "H" is a light weight variation of the square shield.

Googling "pictish warrior" on images gives a lot of fun stuff, including some not safe for work, if you have the filter off.

Very nice stuff; will order shortly. Awesome to see a concentrated effort on the dark ages.

I wish the sculptor would do a bit better job on the horses' chests--the looks a bit like lamas. This is particularly evident in the Romano-Brit line.

I think it's hard to do horses right. These have legs that are too short and a torso that is too long, and the neck does look llama-like, as you point out.

Horses' bodies are robust and fairly short between the shoulders and pelvis, then the neck is a triangle that sits fairly straight on top of the shoulders, rather than leaning out like that. And the legs of course are long.

The men are very nice indeed.

elsyrsyn07 Apr 2010 8:44 a.m. PST

The horses do look a bit too much like dachshund-llama crosses to me, but the picts themselves look great.

Pics of Picts. Always a good thing.

Who asked this joker07 Apr 2010 8:57 a.m. PST

The horses are supposed to be shaggy ponies. They are a bit long but otherwise look pretty good.

bingo nicotine07 Apr 2010 9:15 a.m. PST

I like the figures – you can never have too many Picts. They seem to match up well with the Scots-Irish from SL.

The shields seem a bit fantastical for me, I'd have thought they'd be just as likely to use round shields as everyone else.

Out of interest, the H-shaped shield comes from a hunting scene on the St Andrews sarcophagus while the square shields come from a procession scene on the Brough of Birsay stone.

Are there any UK stockists?

khurasanminiatures07 Apr 2010 9:32 a.m. PST

Looking good!

Greetings. Couple of things.

1. The mounts are ponies, which as acarhj says, accounts for their size.

2. I am always happy to substitute shields and have the rounds that go with the Irish that are easily subbed or added in. Just let me know when you order what you want.

3. I do not have a UK stockist at this time but shipping is the same worldwide.

Thanks.
David

The mounts are ponies, which as acarhj says, accounts for their size.

But not their proportions.

Mirosav07 Apr 2010 9:54 a.m. PST

Bought an army of these at Cold Wars and they are fantastic.

Is that Cluny the Scourge I see in the rat command pack? I assume it's rat command, they don't look much like rabbits, which is how they're listed!

They are indeed rats. My web guy will hopefully fix the mislabeling soon.

doc mcb07 Apr 2010 11:00 a.m. PST

If you look at the Pictish art, as well as at the modern interpretations of it in the Ospreys, the shaggy Pictish ponies are indeed pretty ugly as horses go.

skinkmasterreturns07 Apr 2010 11:51 a.m. PST

I forgot to look at these at Cold Wars, I was too busy buying the Irish DBA army. Of course, these will be on my list foe next year.

Skeptic07 Apr 2010 4:50 p.m. PST

Nice! How do you ship internationally?

Hrothgar Berserk07 Apr 2010 5:38 p.m. PST

I'll be ordering some Picts on the 16th. I like the number of helmets on the figures. I've long thought it a little weird that Picts would run around completely unarmored when their near neighbors had a small proportion of men in mail and helms. So the Picts never captured anything? They could not make a copy?

Demaratos07 Apr 2010 8:56 p.m. PST

great!

Cacique Caribe08 Apr 2010 9:51 a.m. PST

Doc McB: "Note, as well, that there's new orcs"

I noticed that the new packs in that range are mostly Goblins, instead of actual Orcs:

Will there be more Orcs in the near future? I'm waiting for more Orcs before I jump in.

Thanks.
