I really am a big fan of Mr. Rava's work. That being said, I still cannot understand why his paintings for Osprey pale (to the point of, dare I say it, mediocrity) in comparison to those he's done for Italeri and VaeVictis? |
TESTUDO | 14 Sep 2011 8:08 a.m. PST |
But, but
.what Osprey have you seen? something mediocre like that?
or that one?
or
.
and more to follow
.. Thanks anyway to spur me to do better, G.Rava |

I have not been keeping up on Osprey's artists. This one seems to have a definite flair. But, I have to say, he totally missed on the arm "bands" on those Roman Legionaries. Nothing of the sort ever existed, and such a contrivance would render the arms incapable of movement

Who would bid on a print that can be indefinitely reproduced? |
Major Grubbs | 14 Sep 2011 9:05 a.m. PST |
The book I had in mind was the Warrior title on the Italian Blackshirts. The pictures, in my humblest of opinions, were certainly mediocre, judging by Mr. Rava's own high standards. That being said, I look forward to seeing him doing more work for Osprey, especially their Campaign series. |

. The painting is of a battle in Dacia, and supposedly Roman troops were equipped with arm and leg armor when fighting against the Dacians. As for them rendering the arms incapable of movement, IIRC Parthian and Sassanid cataphracts wore similar arm and leg armor and they seem to have been able to move sufficiently well. Doug |

Who would bid on a print that can be indefinitely reproduced? IMHO you've to consider the rather low starting price, try some well known painters' ltd edition print and you'll see the prices! G.Rava |
Daffy Doug | 14 Sep 2011 11:15 a.m. PST |
The "banded" armor for the arms is leather, not iron/steel! Common sense tells you that wrapping the arms in metal bands would never work. The legionaries as depicted are impossible

First, I'd like to say that I own two of the Osprey's in which Mr. Rava's work is published: "Samurai Women," and "Hideyoshi." I bought them partly because the art work is so very good, and make frequent reference to them. Second, it seems unbelievable to me that a few of the posters on TMP cannot wait to make negative comments which often border on the offensive. Can their social skills really be so undeveloped? Everyone has a right to an opinion, its true, but being a boor just because you have the right to be one, is a poor excuse. Attacking people who produce for our hobby is a certain way to drive them to other endeavors, and will ruin this forum. Its an old and common tale. |

Agreed with Wolfgar, but I fear it's a cry lost in a windstorm. Beautiful work, Mr Rava. Your art on modern miniatures boxes reminds me of the old Airfix boxes that so inspired me as a kid. Ken Cliffe |

Nice work Mr. Rava, very attractive. Regards, TC. |

I agree, great work. Shame on you knockers. |

Shame indeed. I've just sent a groveling begging email to OC Pots 'n' Pans, ebay link included. That any of these would make a rather awesome pressie. Keep up the good work Mr Rava. Very inspiring. Kev |

Beautiful, Rava! You should produce a book with your prints in it. I would buy it in an instant! |

I like the book idea, would be more cost effective than buying individual prints? |
TESTUDO | 15 Sep 2011 6:21 a.m. PST |
Yes it's a good idea, but I think it'll not happen soon. |
Daffy Doug | 15 Sep 2011 7:24 a.m. PST |
I wasn't knocking talent: Rava is excellent. I was pointing out a single technical detail that is incorrect. Giu can take it or leave it. But "mex10mm" linked to a pic that shows the practical interpretation of how that armor could work. It is more like a flexible vambrace. Rava's pic shows wide bands going around the arm like the stripes on a barber's pole

Its an old and common tale. When you've stepped off your soapbox, please point to me where someone on this thread has demonstrated borderline offensive behavior and/or underdeveloped social skills. last time I checked, no one is infallible and even the late Angus McBride made mistakes and produced below his usual standards, such as in Osprey's Sassanian Elite Cavalry AD 224–642. While I'm a fan of Mr. Rava's work, if I see any errors, I'd point it out. Yours is the sort of attitude that doesn't encourage improvement and does more damage to forums than any naysayers. |

Absolutely love your artwork, Testudo, there are some real gems there. I don't know if I'm keen on the way you're selling them, as it seems a buyer could easily miss the opportunity to get a particular piece if they miss the auction ending. Have you only got one of each print? If not, have you considered putting them up as buy-it-now auctions with the number available visible? |
TESTUDO | 15 Sep 2011 11:03 a.m. PST |
Wich prints like you, Adam? I'll list one batch just for you, if you buy 4 or more the shipping is free, worldwide. As stated, the edition is open. I dare to suggest subscribing on my store, to receive a newsletter with updating. There'are 200 and more different subjects. If someone wish to own an original, if still available, he could ask
.not the same prices G.Rava |

I have one of your prints on the wall in my house Rava. I love it, but the wife hates it, she prefers , squirrels & pretty flowers to battle scenes!!! so I'm banned from putting any more military prints on the wall, so a book would be great for the likes of me :-) |
